damn is there any other way to drain the coolant from the block without taking off the manifold. turbo, downpipe ect..... ???
Kyle,
you can;t compeltely drain all coolant out, there's still gonna be some left over at the water jacket of the sleeves...
you can drain all in the radiator, ,coolant bypass hose and water pump area....
what happened ?

well my car is overheating intensely
so now i am trying to change the thermostat and flush the cooling system. is it bad that there is still some coolant in there? or can i just change out the thermostat without draining the block? as of now I am taking off my downpipe

well, just drain the coolant out of the radiator and chaneg the thermostat.
and when you;re done, you can do a straigth flush...leave the car running at idle...use a garden hose and fill the top of the radiator and unscrew the radiator plug on the bottom...
do it for like 5-10 minutes....then screw the bottom plugs and fill it up and bleed all the air out of the system....

have you tried taking off the drain bolt on the block itself?. it is a 19mm bolt to the left of the manifold.

I was wondering how you turbo guys drained the coolant in the block completely. I was thinking that you would just drain and fill the radiator a few times over a period of month and eventually the old coolant will be replaced by the new coolant. But then there is contamination issues?!

when the thermostat open and the fan comes on, the coolant system re-circulate itself. by doing it for 20 minutes or more, ,you'll eventually remove all the coolant out of the system...
that's the reason why I suggested to use the running water out of garden hose and use that as a source of water with the drain plug off, then once the fan comes on a couple of times, you'll eventually flush out the coolant from the system....
once you see clear water comes out of the drain hole on the radiator, you can substitute the water frrom garden hose to an antifreeze mix and keep doing it until you see coolant comes out of the drain hole, when you do, plug the drain plug back on, then do normal filling as you normally would...

How about take out the thermostat, and put back the housing. Unhook the bottom radiator hose and the top. Put the water hose on the top radiator house and flush the block out . In the top out the bottom til clear. While the engine is off too. Oh and don't forget to drain the radiator too.

Yeah it does flow the other way, but with the engine off the pump isn't running. I should be easier than putting the hose on the bottom and draining out the top hose. You're just flushing it out.
BUT MIND YOU I havent flushed out my honda motor yet. Only flushed out my old Celica and old Nissan motor, and a small block chevy. I always gone from the top to the bottom. I assume its the same principal.
That's how I'm gonna do it since I blew my head gasket a couple of weeks ago, and after I fixed it I just put water in and drove it. There is still crap (a little oil) lingering when I open the radiator cap.

Thanks for the reply. So with the drain plug removed, the engine running and a hose running water into the radiator it's completely safe? Then take the hose out, pour coolant in until coolant starts to flush out instead of water, then plug it? Doesn't sound too bad.
By the way, I don't know you or anything, but I just read they caught the guy who stole your car! That's great news man! Especially since the insurance company was trying to weasel their way out of paying you. I hope everything's still intact!
