Is this camera mount safe for a HPDE?
This clamps onto the passenger headrest posts:
If you folks say no, I'll leave my expensive video camera home.
TIA.

I love it! That one looks just as crappy as mine! I'm gonna re-do mine before the next auto-x season starts. Clean it up and make it a bit more stable.

I've used that same mount last year at Summit Point Jefferson circuit (NASA event, the mount was in the car at tech). The instructor did not care. If I were you, I would ask the instructor about it before you show up for grid, that'll leave you time to take it off if necessary.
I personally feel that the mount is fine, but since there is someone with you in the car, you really should ask them if they feel it is ok.

An instructor may choose not to get in a car for any safety concern. If I was your instructor, I would grab the mount and shake it to see how sturdy it is, then sit in the car and flail my helmeted head around to see if it could possibly impact. If it passed those tests AND was held with extra straps, I would climb in.
I am sure that any instructor would prefer it be attached to a "harness bar" between the b-pillars, well behind the head. Might want to look into one of those. Or, just get a 4-point rollbar! It's perfect for mounting a camera AND keeping your head attached to your body!
I have used the same mount in the past. Even though mine sucked 10x as bad as yours, the video was still decent.
P.S. The twin-tube design I realize now is retarded. It would be much better to just drill through the center of one box tube with the correct sized bit.

I've got a similar mount in my car. However, I've found that with this car, the end of the single metal tube is aimed closer to the instructor than I would like it to be. I bent the tube back, the aim it more towards the rear of the car, but I wouldn't ask an instructor to get in the car with the way it is now. I'm not comfortable with it. It worked better in the Integra.
I talked to someone who had one of these at summit point. He taped it, straped it to the back, put extra ties or whatever on it and everything he could to ensure it's safty. The instructor started to get in the car, saw it and said "no"
I guess it just depends on the instructor...

I have a similar one from CruzCam but the bar is longer and it connect to both head rest posts with the camera in the middle. Before I had the roll bar, I used it a bunch. Very stable for video. Never tested the crash worthyness of it though.
i made something similar but my instructor would not allow it to be in the car...it is b/c of the rare but dangerous crash and it could literally poke a hole through the driver or the passenger...so i understand and wonder how i can tape my sessions (he wouldn't allow the window mount either b/c of the speeds and other risks)

Why all this fancy 2 tubes cut in half with bolts holding it blah blah, why not just take 1 box tube and drill the holes in it. So much easier.
I had almost exactly the above pictured with me at first, for several autoXes and lapping days at Nelson Ledges. Now i have an IOport mount on my rollbar, which is better of course....never had to deal with instructor issue, quality was OK.
D had one that used both headrests, a single bar, and some U-bolts to attach to the posts. Worked very nicely, but seats had to be moved in unison
