Do you really need a block girdle for a sleeved 84mm ls/vtec?
Hey guys,
I've decided to go with an 84mm ls/vtec instead of an 84mm b18b, it will be boosted down the road a few months (300+ whp).. I don't plan on revving excessively high, maybe 8k at the most, would a Z10 block girdle be a good investment even with the GE sleeves? Is it typically only used on stock sleeved ls/vtecs? Thanks for the help! This board has helped dispel a lot of myths floating around about ls/vtec setups and I want this to go smoooooth
Thanks guys!

I was told that I didn't need the girdle for my application. I will be running na hopefully 200whp with my b20/vtec. Jeff at IB told me I didn't need it, he also told me that Lisa Kubo and her 700whp motor doesn't have a block girdle. Her motor was strong all season. I don't think any major happened to her motor at the end of the season. Some food for thought
I bought a girdle for my engine, but I think I am only going to install it when I raise the rev-limit, install cams and maybe pistons. It helps promote even bearing wear and stabilize the crank at high RPMs.
GSR and Type R engines have it, so there must be a reason why Honda decided to put it in those!

in tems of why you need a girdle, on any full torque motor that revs high such as anythign 1.8 liter and up that see's 8KRPM+ peridoically, its a very good safeguard, whether you buy the Z10 conversion kit or jsut get a GSR/Type R and mill the center main journal is your choice but its always a good choice. I must have built hundreds of motors and all had girdles except the b16 and b17 which I think has a good enough rod/stroke and low piston speeds at high RPM that it didn;t need it ...
also, if oyu do a b20 or b18a/b with b17a crank then I dont feel you need it either, but anythign 1.54 and 1.58 rod ratios I think its a good guard.
