Default IT racers with sheet metal sunroof

For those IT drivers who for one reason or another have replaced their OE sunroof with a piece of sheetmetal, what metal and guage of metal did you use? Unfortunately, my stock sunroof skin is bent out of shape, so I'd like to replace it with a sheetmetal panel. I know that the GCR states you can replace the sunroof with a panel or replacement skin of the same material, but it says nothing about the guage of the metal.

It should be the same thickness as the remainded or the roof.

Your best best is to find a junker that does not have the sunroof and cut the complete roof off and use it your material. It is going to be the proper thickness and will have the proper contour.

my sunroof was removed and replaced with sheet metal before I bought the car. The metal looks to be just as thick or a little thicker than the rest of the roof. It is riveted down. should be easy

It looks really good! I hope mine turns out that nice. Is it water proof? Any other pics? This is the only one I found.

when there is snow on top of the car some water will leak through the antenna. otherwise, it is just fine.

I'm fairly certain the gauge we used was thicker than the roof - it feels more solid too. Anyone think this will cause me a problem when i get my car teched at my first SCCA school/regional this weekend?

Has anyone left the OE metal sunroof in and secured it. I believe they make some kind of clips for this but can't seem to find any info on them.

Thanks in advance.

SCCA rules silliness #451:

It is not legal in Club Racing to tape over body seams on stock-bodied cars...

On my car, I used 26 guage galvanized sheet metal from Home Depot. ~$20 for a 3'x2' piece. This thickness was workable (bendable and cut-able). Personally, I think it is a bit thin, but it passed tech last week. Because this is a bit thin, everytime I hit a bump/curb on the track, I have a steel drum going off above my head. I recommend putting in support rods (to stiffen) and gluing some foam (to kill the drumb effect) on it. (Sorry no pictures until I can buy a digi camera.)

I finally found a local metal worker/welder and he had 20 guage dark metal. The "dark metal" actual steel sheet, as opposed to aluminum (duct type) sheets. Cost about the same. I will install that sometime.

what if i were to use say 20 gauge material. its thicker than what the rest of the roof is, but it will weigh more. i figure the way the rule is worded is for people to not go thinner than what the rest of the roof is?

The alternate to finding and salvaging is to buy the genuine Honda 2nd gen DX roof skin panel. We gutted the roof (and interior as well) and the new panel was welded in. The ITCS permits this as an alternate to welding a sheet of steel (correct gauge) over the opening or using straps, etc. BTW: The skin panel sells new for ~$300 retail and $250 with discounts.

asked my pop what we used and he said 22... could have gone a little thinner, it was semi-difficult to manipulate at this thickness
