the motor was a ls/vtec in a 92 teg
1) misshift and blew the ring lands
2)2000 miles
3)skunk 2 valvesprings, crower cams, type R pistons, skunk 2 im, + basic bolts on
4)b17 head (92 gs-r)
5)skunk 2 p28 ecu
6)me and the shop where I work at
7)no

I love ls/vtec and would always stick with it. I now have a ls/vtec in a del sol. But in the future, I would like to build a turbo gs-r.

When I blew it I was racing a mustang at the illegals. I had'em out the hole by like 2 cars, I shifted into 2nd and it jammed. I had problems w/ the tranny earlier that week, and had it looked at. I was told to take it easy but ignored it and u can see what happened. The new motor i have is the **** though!!!!

I don't think a rev limiter will help if you misshift.

If you use a soft touvh rev limit or spark cut, a missed shift will not cause you to over rev the motor. You will just hit the spark cut and the motor will only rev to where you want it to rev. Using the stock fuel cut is problematic due to the fact that it starves the engine of fuel once the rev limit is hit...Obviously no fuel is one way to cause detonation and blow your motor.

uhh are ypup stoiopid?
why dont you get one of those spark cuts and shift into secdond at 100 mph and tell me what happens. if the motor is being PULLED to higher rpm by the wheels, nothing is going to stop it from overrevving.

Nope. But it should slow down REAL fast!

#1 reason people blow up their motor. And it does not matter whether its an LS CRV or GSR:

MIS SHIFTING AT HIGH RPM.

Nothing can stop the motor, mechanically from going to whatever RPM it can get to...as in 12k+.

Referring to CRV/LS/VTEC's....possibly bad oil flow caused by alot of lower budget setups with LS oil pumps possibly.

Honestly, to be real, there is no downside to LS/VTEC at all if built right VS a GSR motor UNTIL you start revving it above 9k RPM. Then the LS/CRV crank will vibrate more due to the higher piston speed. And YES, it still vibrates when it has a girlde...

I wouldn't know....mis shifting is like 99.9% of all the blown motors. I mean, thats not just flat out negligence like no oil.

Thats my opinion. I have seen alot and we build probably more than anyone here.

Even when we push 480 WHP through a LS block with no girlde, at 8500 RPM it stays reliable for a period of time I cannot measure, because its still running...I should say "THEY" are still running.

Look to the answer: MIS SHIFING #1 reason people blow up....

Jeff

As far as misshifting goes, I now have a msd 6al in my car with rev limit and I can honestly say it save my butt at least 4 times already from misshifting....I would strongly recommend getting one!! I have my rev limit pills at 8600 so when i misshift, it won't go past 8600....Just want to say to Jeff and importbuilders..Great whp # from your b20vtec and lsvtec

LS and CRV motors were not built to be high revvers (even though i think the CRV has the same oil pump as the gsr/itr) but even still. They have a longer stroke for lower revving bottem end power. Yup mis shifts are a killer

I think when they mean mis-shift, they mean downshift into wrong gear eg, 5-2 or up shift 4 to 3.

so any kind of rev limit won't work in this case.

It happen when you sleepy...
