Default How do you change your transmission fluid?

I was wondering what is needed to change your transmission fluid? Are there any special precautions I need to be aware of? Any input would be appreciated.

you will spill some on the ground.

you need to undo the drain bolt..
let it drain.

put drain bolt back in..

undo fill bolt..
put new fluid in until it starts to come out..

The way to change tranny fluid is first drain out the old fluid, then fill it up with some new fluid and shift the car to different gear then drain out the fluid again. Do this until the fluid is clear.

you're correct !!!
not too many people do this though, so the residue is still in there after the 1st change.

also, my process in changing oil, drain at the drain plug, pull of fill plug and leave it off(dont fill from fill plug, too much effore), pull out VSS sensor from top (one 10mm bolt holds it), full with long stem and fill until it starts to drip out of fill plug, replace fill plug, add lil extra and you're done.

wait wait.
so the correct order to flush the transmission is

drain
fill
shift gear
drain
refill?

Greg

That sounds alot easier than taping a funnel to the end of a hose and pouring from top in the fill hole, like I've always done. Thanks for the good info.

Thanks, J

hmm... Never done it that way. Makes sense, but it would take forever
that would also be expensive to if you fill it completely up and drain it.

ok easier way to do if you have a auto

1. buy a bottle of Lube Guard

2. take car to Jiffy Lube or any other place that uses a Wynns Tranny flush machine

3. For $80 let them hook up the machine and your car will exchange all the fluid in the tranny with new Dextron II

4. Add one bottle Lube Guard that you bought

Yes this way you can get all the residue out. Just watch and see...the first 2 flush you gonna see black fluid(depend on when the last time you change the fluid). Yea changing it in Jiffy lube is nice and easy, but for $80? I wouldn't spend $80 to let them do it if i know how to do it. It's not expensive @ all to do all this procedure. For the first few flush. Just buy some cheap tranny fluid from Wal-Mart or something. I think around $3 for a gallon, then for the last final fill up, buy some higher quality fluid.

a lot of honda dealers only use the drain and fill method....if you look at it this way

$60 for a drain and fill

or

$80 for a complete exhange plus $11 for lubeguard

I pay the $90 anyday

BTW that lube guard is worth every penny as it does work as advertised

Yea you get the most out of it. Drain it out until it's clear. That's all. If you got the money to spend. Go ahead. Not me.
