Default Please Help. RPM's Limited and Very Slow Acceleration

Hi,

I just bought a used car that had some mods done to it. I suspect that it may have had a problem from before I bought it, but recently noticed the RPM's wont go past around 3500. Even in 1st gear it stops acceleration at around 3500. The car has a rev limited pill system, with a 7k pill in it now, and when in neutral or with clutch in, I can rev to the full 7k, but when driving I get what feels like no torque, and the rpms are limited. Any ideas as to what it could be? Have already checked compression: 180 pounds, spark (I have MSD ignition) which was fine. Im really not sure where to start as the person I bought the car off of is a mechanic and has been looking at the car for over a week and has no idea. Ive read that this problem could be something with the VTEC? Can someone please please shed some light on possible problem areas because I really dont know much about cars. Oh by the way, its a 1994 ex 1.6 vtec. Any other info or if you need the whole list of mods, just ask .Thanks a ton,

Eric

Yes the speedo works fine. Could you elaborate a little more about "safe mode" and what component could have caused this?

safe mode is when the ecu read a sensors thats not within spec... thus switching you in like a limp mode/ safe mode so you dont hurt the motor... i say check the vss because thats what happened when i did my jdm swap on my subie... lemme talk to some of my tech that i know and the shop i work at and ill let you know what might be the problem

Thanks very much. Anyone else have any input on possibilities?

So far my list of possibilities:

Distributor
Fuel Pump/filter
VSS Sensor
Something VTEC??
ECU??

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The car has no cat on it now. Previous owner had straight pipe exhaust made right after inspection. I suspect he may have had this issue before and removed the cat to try to fix it. But its def not that. Any other ideas peoplesss?
