In order to smog you need to go through BAR. If you go to a guy that doesnt care what motor you have thats called an "under the table" or "illegal" smog.

if the motor passes the sniffer test then i would just make sure the visual is up to par. Then get the motor bar'd. Legit is the way to go... especially in California.

When your car is already BAR'ed, do you have to do it again when its time to smog you vehicle?

Yes even though you are Bar'd you still have to get the car smogged ever few years just like any other car in the state.

The only difference is they run the test according to what engine is marked on the Bar sticker so a higher emitting GSR say obviously wouldn't pass a test for a single cam y6 which doesn't emit as much. They use the parameters for the GSR to test the GSR swapped car.

As everyone else has stated. Get it Bar'd and you will save yourself lots of hastle and crap later.

I know that you have to smog it every few years but will you have to go BAR it again?

If you get pulled over and the person decides to be a dick and has reason to believe your motor was modified further then you will have to be inspected again.
