Default Help with pinging please help

Hey i totalled my 94 sho and picked up a 97 civic dx from a local girl. Since i got it it which was like 2 weeks ago it makes a pinging noise under accelleration. I do not know hondas yet which is why i am asking im in a whole different world now than with my old car. Its wierd i tried a few things just to see the result...when sitting there in neutral and revving the car does not make the noise to my knowledge, it is only when i am accellerating and if i am cruising it seems to stop like if i am not on the gas. It is like a guick repetetive tinking noise that it makes and i would really really like to get rid of it. any and all suggestions, comments and advice are greatly appreciated. help me out with getting rid of this noise please...thanks in advance,,,

pinging is caused by the timing being to far advanced, so if u have changed timing or if u started using a higher octane fuel this may be the cause for the ping, try to put a timing light on it if possible or if u do use high octane gas try using 87 once, hope this will help, good luck,

bump.....problem is still there...it does not seem to do it when i am revving in neutral only when i am in gear and on the gas. I am trying to figure out timing i want to do that but i dont know how to...i will try again in the am though. so basically only things it could be are timing and valve lash? anything else it could possible be????
thanks

So lower quality gas will get rid of an engine pinging? And all this time I've been paying out the *** to fill up on premium in order to abuse my engine.

93 isn't magic juice... it's not going to cover up any issues you have. It's simply a deterrent to detonation.

As stated further up in the thread, it sounds like your timing is too far advanced. Hook your timing light up to power/ground and the inductive lead to plug wire #1 which is all the way to the driver's side of the engine. Point the light down at the groove near the engine mount and you should see the hash on the crank pulley when the light is flashing. It should line up with the groove that you're aiming at if your timing is set correctly.

If not, your timing belt may have skipped a tooth or your distributor may be incorrectly adjusted. If it looks new, maybe someone tried to replace the distributor and didn't adjust the timing. If the timing belt was replaced recently, maybe it was incorrectly installed.

check your ignition timing. If the distributor is not timed right it could cause pinging.

Both Hondas I've owned would ping under high load / low RPM with the timing set correctly. The transmission in the DX makes it a real bear, just downshift when climbing hills, etc.

My wife's bone stock '00 Echo even pings when you load it like that.
