Default Boosting soon. H23 block vs. H22

Hey guys. Ive been on this site for about 2 years now. I dont post very often but I do read ALOT!!!! Anyways, this is my question.

Im thinkin about boosting a JDM H22A and from the research Ive gathered, Ive seen people boosting a H23 block with a H22 head.

Can someone tell me the difference between the two blocks? Pros and Cons?

Ive searched this site about a million times now (ok, maybe about 5 or 6) along with some other forums and just cant find the answer. Im thinking its somewhat like a LS/VTEC for H series motors.

Please, ANY input would be greatly appreicated!!!!!!

the blocks themselves are identical, its the internals that are different. h22=87 bore 90.7 stroke 10:1 cr, h23=87 bore 95 storke and 9.8:1 cr

both have weak pistons and will crack right at the ring landings if not tuned corecctly.

boosting on either block will yeild good results, the h22 can take alittle more revs but produces less low end torque, the h23 revs less but his more mid and low range torque.

the r/s ratio is really what your talking about. do you want more stroke and a worse r/s ratio or less stroke and beter r/s ratio

for mild boost really either block is fine, just don't push it past 11 or 12 ish with out a great tune

edit: the jdm h22a has a 10.6:1 cr. boosting on higher compression ratios is harder keep in mind. more compression means your more likely to detonate.

So as far as the blocks, they're identical. So with the H23 block with 9:8:1 cr, thats not necessarly saying H23 can handle more boost?Weak pistons is common in H22's?? Ive read people build threads and some are actually using stock pistons if Im not mistaken.

Sorry about sounding too much like a noob, but Im really in the grey as far as H series goes.

The h23 isn't any stronger than the h22 for boost. The key is to utilize the 95mm stroke of the h23 opposed to the shorter stroke on the h22. That in turn gives you more displacement. The h23vtec is a great motor, especially boosted. But to be honest with you, just keep it simple. It really depends on what you 'want' out of your motor and I would say for the majority of daily driven set-ups a straight h22a set-up is just fine.

Here is a chart of the last built h23vtec that I tuned:

yeah, I boosted my stock internals/stock head engine and it shat out on me a year later. My valves couldn't take it even @ 8-9 psi, and I think even if they had held my ring lands would have gone next. Anyways, bottom line, you should do a rebuild if you want to turbo and have it be reliable.
