Default oil pressure problem

going home on my lunch break today and i had a clear road ahead of me so i got on it mid 3rd gear and hit fourth for a couple seconds, then when i slowed down i noticed my oil pressure gauge(autometer elect.) read really low. so i pulled off the road, popped the hood, no excessive blowby, no smoke anywhere, oil is at normal level. started it back up, no noises or anything unusual. but the gauge reads 0, at idle, and jumps when i hit the gas. so i decide to turn around and go back to work, oil pressure reads about 40 (normally 75) when driving but immediatly drops when off the gas/out of gear. got back to work fine, no clanking, but there is a slight noise comeing from around the oil pump area. its really faint, but its defenitly a new sound. could the pump gears be broke?

take off your turbo oil feed line from the turbo. Undo the distributor plugs and have somebody crank up the motor while you hold the oil feed line to see if any oil comes out of the oil feed line.

Also, check your oil from the oil pan to see if there's any metal shavings

thanks stan. i did this as soon as i got off work. pulled the oil feed off the turbo, set it aside, cranked it over and oil shot a good 6 ft. hooked it back up and started the car, oil pressure gauge read a solid 25, then started to flicker all over the place. going to get a new gauge, easy fix!

so i went to autozone, bought a new gauge and just swapped the sending units. gauge worked fine for 1 day. and now its not getting a reading again. this time it didnt act funny at all, just stopped.
what makes the sending unit go bad?
