97 JDM ITR Tranny: Missing VIN... Any suggestions/advice?
Honda-tech,
A while ago, i bought a 97 JDM ITR tranny but it had no vin number and i don't believer there was a serial sticker for the tranny (i can't check right now cause it's stored in a really secure crate at a friend's house who's now out of town)... it did have the holes for the vin plate... whether it originally had one or not, i'm not sure. I definitely trusted the seller. My question is whether or not that year tranny would have had VIN plates? Any suggestions or advice? I'm in Kansas City right now, but I plan on possibly moving back to california in a couple years where the CHP would be much harder to get by.
By the way, I've done my search:

.... numerous others, but nothing definitive that satisfies me

JDM trannies never came with vin #'s but they do have the rivets for them. so you're fine

it could have been a replacement under warranty...
mine has been replaced and there are no vin tags on it...

JDM transmissions NEVER come with vin plates but do have the holes (unthreaded holes). usdm dealer bought replacement transmissions also NEVER come with vin plates but have unthreaded holes as well. Any 96+ Integra transmission came with a vin plate if the transmission was in the car when it was sold brand new. if you buy a tranny with threaded vin plate holes, and no plate, the vin is missing.

if a cop looked at my tranny and asked about it, i would show them the paperwork from acura for the replacement.
for your case, tell them it is from japan hence no vin...

lol in NY we have autocrime and acura/honda owners are frequently abused and hoods a popped, numbers are ran. cops here know how jdm trannies, dealer trannies, and usdm trannies all look. i don't know how it works in MO but just say its japanese and see what they say. i didn't even know police in MO popped hoods or even knew where to locate a vin plate on a honda tranny.
