tranny vin question
If I get a tranny that's supposed to have a VIN on it, but doesn't, would that automatically make the police or whatever assume that it's stolen? I'm thinking of buying one off a friend but for some reason it doesn't have the number, and I wouldn't want to get in any trouble for it or get it confiscated. Keep in mind I live in Idaho where theft is not a huge problem, but I'm still kind of worried.
Also, I keep hearing 'serial', what is this serial number people are talking about? Is there both a VIN and some kind of serial number I should be looking for? TIA

If you get stopped and the vin is missing and they know that it should be there then it would be a problem.
Do you know the source of the transmission? the car it came from?
I would get a bill of sale from whoever sold it to you and if it is really a friend you shouldn't have to worry. but I wouldn't buy it from some shady person.

i got impounded for having no VIN # on my tranny. even though i was an OBD-I car. BONE STOCK. car came with this motor from DEALER, i got impounded, tranny yanked, paid impound fee's, paid labor for tranny fee's, lost my tranny, etc etc. OBD-i cars dont have "VIN #" on trannies, they have "SERIAL STICKERS" serial stickers come from FACOTRY, they wont know which Tranny went to which car, IE a TV gets stamped with a SERIAL STICKER, they wont know WHERE it went to which home was it sold to. ETC. so i got F*cked over by COPS and lost my tranny , and 2,000$ total. OBD-II on other hand have VIN #'s (Green TAGS)

94-95 have serial number, you can peel it out and leave in the car, if you get pull over just show them the vin
96+ will be a green vin tag, it will hard to get it out, only you will hvae to drill it out, cops pull you over and if you dont have it they will ask you, if you supply them any vin, they will let you slide
since your not in cali, i doubt cop will harrass you about tranny
reason on being cop harrassing people like us is because the theft rate have gone up so fast and they think this and that.

Well I guess that answers my question, I don't think I need to be too worried. If I ever got pulled over and they said something about having no tranny vin, could I just tell them it's an older tranny and that it had a serial number that fell off? Or is there a different between the two that'd let them know (if they really knew what they were talking about)?
