Default Code 67 - how to fix? [Catalyst system Efficiency Below Threshold...]

Hi guys,

I'm trying to help my buddys fiance' out, she just moved here from New Mexico and they got engaged and all that crap... anyways

she's got a 97 civic ex coupe

i haven't really looked it over, but, she bought it from some kid in san diego and i see it has some dc headers, and looks like an apexi catback, theres side markers and a short shifter, component set up front and some other stuff...

well her check engine light has been on since she bought it... and like alot of girls (i didn't say "all", i said "alot"), she just kept driving and driving until i seen it and decided to check the code.

its code 67, and according to c-speed's webpage, it says:

"Catalyst system Efficiency Below Threshold malfunctioning or defective catalyst system"

does this mean the cat is junk? or gutted or something? or could it be from a bad o2 sensor? or maybe a bad seal on the o2 sensor or something?

thanks guys
-mike

Hey, thats funny this post is up. I was wondering the same thing. I own a 2000 civic si with 50,000 miles. My check engine light is also on for code 67. my car backfires from under the car and makes little clicking noises from under also. One of my guesses is though ... I think my spark plugs and wires are bad causing it not to burn all the gas. But then again that does bring back the question of why it didn't throw out an o2 sensor code. Its weird. I took a look at it yesterday but didn't visually see anything wrong. I plan to take the cat out today and check it out. Can anyone help us?

I just ordered new spark plug wires (magnecor 8.5mm ) today. Hopefully that will help! I also have like 2 month old plugs in so I shouldn't have to change those. I took a look at my cap and rotor and stuff, nothing bad there just the plugs. I'll let you know if it fixes it when I get them

plug wires aren't going to fix it. the problem code is coming from you secondary O2 sensor. either an O2 sensor has gone bad or your cat has gone bad. i had this code on my turbo LS when i ran a 3 inch cat. the way i fixed it was i cut the constant voltage wire to the ECU. that code never came on again.
