Default DIY S2K button start w/ cruise control harness

Ok finally after a while I got tired of reading "how do i wire up a S2K start engine button" no one really had any good writeups or explanations. Even on HT all I see is "Im gonna do it and write up DIY" but they never do.

For Type R (I dont know if you have cruise control) so if you dont then go to a junk yard and get the harness)

Ok first of all for all you blingy people who want a fancy button you can get the S2K push start button for 30 somethign at honda. or if you want to be sleeper and you dont care about Cruise control, you CAN use your cruise control button as a push start button too. The S2K button I got "used" seems to be faulty so i tried out the cruise control button and I lucked out it too also works.

BUT a warning due to teh design of the switch inside of the cruise control, the switch is not momentary. meaning you push it in and it stays pushed in. So imagin that it is liek turning the key, after you start the car think of what happens if you leave the key still turned forward? you hear this screeching sound of the starter motor trying to start a running engine. well same thing. as soon as the engine craks over push the cruise control again to release it. if you use the S2K button you jsut hold it down then let go.

Here is what you need

S2K button (or use your cruise control button)
if you use the S2k button you need 77266-ST7-003ZA LID ASSY., VISOR SWITCH to make a collar for the button
relay 30A BOSCH SR-2 Relay
female connectors
inlne connectors.
wire cutter/stripper/crimp
flat screwdriver
phillips screwdriver
10mm socket wrench

Ok one of the biggest confusion for the S2K button is where to find a suitable harness for the 5 pins?

You only need three pins, two of them dont do anything. but I found the perfect harness . . .

CRUISE CONTROL!!!!

I pulled out the cruise control button and noticed that it too has 5 pins. the harness plug needed a minor modification to make it fit in the S2K button.

So here we go.

pull out the cruise control button. it helps to use a flat screwdriver. Unplug the baby blue harness plug

If you look at the back of the S2K button and the Cruise control button you will see that the cruise contrl button has a vertical channel on the left side. that matches up with a small piece of plastic that sticks up from the harness plug. cut that little piece of plastic and try to fit the blue plug into the S2K button. keep trimming that piece down to make the plug fit in the s2k button.
Look at the right hand side of the plug in the pic below

Remove the steering column cover and under dash cover

also the knee bolster metal thing remove that too.

Go back to the cruise control button hole and look for the baby blue harness plug. reach underneath the dash and pull it out. cut the harness off and give plenty of slack for wire tapping.

You will need to find the thick loom under the steering column. cut the loom open but be careful not to cut any wires.

There should be a few black tubes. im not sure which one it is but you need to keep opening each one to find the black with yellow stripe and black with white stripe.

Blk/wht is for the starter
blk/ylw is for the ignition.

cut these wires. there will be two ends. one that goes up to the key cylinder and the other side going down and that goes to the motor.

Ok so look at the diagram for the wiring. It looks retarded and complex but it is not

Here is a picture that shows the position of the relay points and their corresponding numbers

Now look at this picture.

See how the top two wires are not being used? and the bottom three are? (if you go back and look at my crappy diagram the picture of the button board is looking at it from the back side)
Well using the picture above as orientation. here is the wiring.
(reference my diagram for which is what wire)

Use the female adapters to plug into the spade connectors on the relay

A wire (bottom wire in pic)-> #86 on relay
B wire (middle wire in pic) -> motor side ylw/blk ignition wire
C wire (top wire in pic) -> #85 on relay (use another length of wire and tap into 85 and C-wire to ground it to any bolt under the dash.

#87 on Relay -> blk/wht motorside starter wire

#30 on relay goes to 12V power in fuse box. look at the picture it is the red female adapter circled in red there are other points that have 12v too I just used that one. If you have a test ligth you can check for 12v power when the key is turned to ON.

You are done. test it out by stepping on the clutch. put your key in the ignition and turn to ON (position right before cranking starter also the dash lights will all come on) Now push the button and car should start.

this configuration will disable the key from starting the car.

IF you want to KEEP the key starting feature then reconnect the ylw/blk wire ends. so you jsut tap the #87 from relay into the ylw/blk wire.

Also if you are using the S2K button then you need to take the 77266-ST7-003ZA LID ASSY., VISOR SWITCH cover and cut a hole in the center for the switch to fit in. there are some ridges on the button cylinder that you may need to shave off.

I do not take any responsibility for your car if you make a mistake. If you cut the ylw/blk wire and blk/wht wire that will void your warranty. If some how it doesnt work. then reconnect the blk/wht and blk/ylw wires.

Nice write up. I have this "mod" done on my beater Civic.
I actually hid the button behind the coin holder door so it isnt visable to peering eyes.

haha I know its not really fuctional and a bit of a ricer thing but i always thought that it is cool and if it wasnt for the backlash of people who think pushing a button is extra work than cranking a key im sure many more people would do it. Its fun to jsut push a button rather than an S2K

"well then get an S2K"

oh ok sure i'll just go and shake my money tree in the back of my house and jsut go buy and S2K.

not all of us have good jobs. we jsut get by with what we got. or we are not spoon fed s2ks by our parents. So im not trying to pretend I have an S2k but this is a neat gimmick.

you are welcome. I know there wasnt a definitive answer on how to do this for our cars.

here is an update:

Here is a pic of the S2K button in place of the dimmer switch. I want to move the start engine button here as it is right next to the key. But what to do with dimmer ****? well the **** itself can come off. as i was tryign to pop out the entire switch the little flange collar broke and the whole switch fell back into the dash. oh ok oops. but actually that helps me cause i dont use the dimmer at all anyway (YOU MUST KEEP THE DIMMER PLUGGED IN other wise you will no longer have dash lights)

I also jsut picked up a jdm amber foglight switch from hmotorsonline for 20 bucks and it came with teh harness. the harness is exactly the same as the cruise control harness.

So right now im using this as my push start until i get a replacement S2K button

JDM itrs dont have dimmers or cruise control so i think this is the same cover plate i was talking about. I need to confirm if USDM ITRs are the same

you cut it like this

and then put the S2K button inside it l;ike in the pic above.

fyi - the connector for an old floppy drive is a perfect connector. Plus not many are being used any more

Nice write up.

I've had my S2k button for about a year and a half but a friend did it. I'm not sure what plug he used but it only took him a minute to search through all his old harness to find the right plug. I also modified the cruise control block off plate to mount my switch but has since cracked on one side somehow so I will need to replace it.

You are right about it being a ricer mod but I dont care. Its just fun to use sometimes plus it lights up amber at night.

i know screw the critics. i dont think it is ricer. it is a stock honda part and we arent using neons or hyper whites to illuminate. its just a neat feature that i saw on teh S2k and thought hey its not to hard to make my car do that too.

now this might be a dumb question... but if you have to do all the normal steps as far as push the clutch in and insert the key, turn the key two clicks "one click just shy of starting the car" why the hell would you install a push button... to look cool? Just turn the key in my opinion.

haha pretty much. this isnt for everybody. Its jsut a neat gimmick. To each there own right? im not saying Neon under body ights and mixmatched unpainted fiberglass body kits are great. but this little mod is a small indulgence.

This should maybe be moved into the FAQ page if it ins't there already.

Off hand, I would think of the button as being similar to that of the start button on a motorcycle.

Its a nice feature, just kind of hard to justify when the ignition is right there and with the turn of the wrist is the same thing.

For those who are lazy. Or want to change it up I guess. Personally, I wouldn't want to make one of these cars easier to steel.

Nice write-up.

I don't know if anyone looked on ITRCA or not, but they have a nice write-up as well on their 'ancient' site .
