Hood Lock?
Can someone enlighten me as to how these work? Does any one have any pics or instructions as to how they installed them? I want more protection but when I look them up on the net I see long cables and such and I guess I just don't know what its all for
Also, any locks that you guys wanna suggest?
Thanks
Alex

the best one I've seen is the Hood Lock by Club, you can find it here http://store.autotoys.com/cgi-bin/wf.../View/WIN00756. It works well because it locks even if there is no power.
The other versions I've seen are the hood pins and or the cable system like this one. http://store.autotoys.com/cgi-bin/wf.../View/HOODLOCK
With the first one the cable may be in the way but just install a quick release clip at the end of it and you can take it off and put it back on easily.

Haven't tried one yet myself, but I've been thinking about this one... http://jcwhitney.com/product.jhtml?CATID=4708
I didn't really like that one because if you can get int to the car, just cut the cable at the key and jank on it. I talked to 3 people that said that is what happened to them. The electric club one is always locked, even if there is no power, you actually need power to unlock it, and no extra key to carry.

I have it installed on mine.
I recommended.
What all is required to put it in, and how much room does it take up under the hood?

Also, I'm a little confused still, will this cable run throgh my engine bay from the hood latch, into the cabin? How do you open/close the hood? Is it hard to install?
to all the responses
the spool for the cable is about 4x4 inches and it is placed in the engine bay attached to the hood. there is a small box with a switch that can be placed anywhere to release the hood lock for 1 minute for you to open the hood. after the 1 minute the spool locks again. I hope this helps I tried looking for the box for mine but I couldn't find it.
http://store.autotoys.com/cgi-bin/wf.../View/WIN00756 there is a picture of the unit here. you do not need to have it professionally installed. But you may if you want.

Where do you put this box, in the cabin?

I meant I could not find the box the unit came in, I wanted to post the instructions.
Maybe this will help
The power supply can be put anywhere
The wire spool, you need to find a good place for it, the instruouctions tell you the best place to put it
The switch needs to be hidden
You need to hit the switch and you have one minute to open the hood before the switch locks. after it locks you can only put the hood down, while the spool retracts, and cannot lift the hood up, pull on the wire.
It is simple to install, the hardest part is finding a good place for the wire spool that attaches to the hood so it is not easily reachable and has the best hold of the hood.
Disclaimer: I am no way associated with Autotoys, it is the obly place that I know that selld the hood lock.
Sorry, I know it would be nicer to post pics of my set up but that is not going to happen, I like to keep the hood lock location hidden....

So, if I get this right, you have a box with wire spooled up in it under your hood. This spool of wire attaches to a thing on your hood. When you press the button which is hidden inside your car, it releases the spool of wire. Then you run out, and open your hood. But, you have a wire running from the spool to the hood, so it's like having another hood prop in the way? Or am I totally lost?
I like the idea of some sort of magnetic lock or something, but it would really suck to have a cable running from the radiator support to the top of my hood when I'm working on the car.

that is basically it. what I did was weld a the loop part of a gate latch( small one to my hood) and painted it white with touch up paint then used one of those rock climbing latches and attached it to the end of the cable to the latch on the hood. Now when I open the hood if the cable is in the way I just unlatch the cable, when I am done I hook it back up and close the hood. It may be not be the best lock considering you may always have a cable attached to the hood that is constantly pulling on the hood, but I saw it as the best lock yet, 1) it is pretty much unreachable to cut and 2) it is always locked even if there is no power to the car.
I am not sure how well the hood pins work but considering the lock is accesibel from the outside of the hood it can always be bypassed, drill the lock of or something, with a magnetic lock I would assume you need power all the time for the magnet to work, if anyone finds the power supply they just cut it and your done, and with the cable system just cut at the lock and yank on it to unlock.
Even though I think this is a good lock I still have a pager alarm, backup battery, horn with backu battery built in, autolock and the car is in a garage. Just another layer of security.
If this doesn't help, all I can say is buy the hoodlock play with it take a look at it adn if you don't like it I am sure where ever you get it from will have a 30 day return. also search the internet, there may be better explanations out there on how it works.

thanks for the info!
One more question: Someone told me it is illegal to put hood lock/pin on a car due to the fact that police want to open the hood asap in case of emergency. I know laws are different from state to state, conuntry to country, but is there any truth in that statement? (I am in Toronto)
