My '95 Honda Prelude's idle is revving from about 1200-3000, CONSTANTLY, when I'm in neutral (manual trans). It goes up & down like clockwork, man. It goes up to 3000 then goes back down to 1200 then it goes right back up to 3000 & then back down to 1200.

I ran out of gas recently & that's when the problem immediately began. I put in a new fuel filter, to no avail. Is the problem in my fuel pump (which is located in the tank, or just outside of the tank behind my rear seat, I think), or is it something else? The revving is driving me absolutely bonkers, so if you could help, I'd really appreciate it. I don't want to spend the money on a new fuel pump, only to find out it's something else.

I heard another Honda (Civic) revving just like mine & I wanted to pull the guy over & ask him if he'd run out of gas recently, too. I've had the car for 6 years, with no problems. It still gets 25 mpg, thereabouts, and once I'm driving above 2500 rpm, it revs & drives normally...

Please help.

Sounds like a vacume leak.

Also check if ur Fast Idle Valve is broken. That makes idle jump as well.

 

mine did that when i put a throttle body spacer on. u didnt install one of those did you?

 

sounds like a vac. leak...or LIKE THEY SAID fast idle control valve...i had the same prob .twice....first was fast idle. second vac. leak i had a busted Intake Man. GASKET!!!!..its an easy fix

Fast Idle Valve Controller is broken. Open the controller and screw in the plastic gasket-like srew inward. Over time the screw unscrews itself. This causes the vacuum leak.

 

Thanks, Guys, I really appreciate the help. I thought it might have something to do with a gasket or some other unknown airflow problem. Now, I guess I better go get a Chilton's (or look it up on the internet), to find exactly what & where the aforementioned Fast Idle Valve Controller is located, as I have NO clue, lol!

I won't know what to do if I don't hear that constant revving...everyone knows when I'm coming (as I have an exhaust leak, too!), particularly my family, my dogs, and my neighbors...

I'm off to try to find the Fast Idle Valve Controller, wish me luck!

does it have an irratic idle when cold or when it's warm? fingers point to FITV when cold or IACV when warm. like what others said, could be a vacuum leak also.

 

try going to 92lude.com and trying their fix for this problem...Search on here for the link...I had the same problem then did their fix and it worked for me.

This is your problem..has nothign to do with you being cheap and running out of gas!
