Default Part 3 - ranta18's H22 All-Motor Build

Continuing from Part 2: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1597753

The pistons return from Calico with the skirts and tops coated:

The build process is repeated as shown in previous steps. The OEM head gasket is replaced with a Cometic MLS gasket. All of the rockers are put into the head and a valve adjustment is done.

The windage tray and oil pickup are bolted up to the block:

Hondabond is applied to the block and oil pan. The gasket is placed on the block and oil pan bolted up:

An OEM intake manifold gasket is trimmed to match the head ports. The throttle body, injectors, and fuel rail are attached to the intake manifold and bolted to the head:

The valve cover gasket is set into place and the valve cover is attached to the head. The distributor, spark plugs, spark pug wires, VTEC solenoid, upper radiator tube, and crank pulley are installed. Other than a few small things, the long block assembly is complete:

sweet build bro.... im not trying to flame here, maybe someone else can chime in with their own experiences but I work @ a honda dealer and everytime one of my retard co-workers puts hondabond or grey gasket maker on a block that requires a rubber gasket they leak due to improper sealing/mushrooming of the gasket.

The only time you would use a large amount of hondabond would be on all aluminum pans such as those that come on the pilot/odessey or newer gen civics that dont have pans designed for rubber gaskets but just large amounts of gasket maker.

If anything ive only ever used hondabond on the corners of the pan in small amounts to help keep the gasket in position when mating it to the block under the lift.

Just trying to help prevent leaks, it'd be alot easier to take it off now then when its in the car. goodluck bro, can't wait for the dyno results

I hope to hit the dyno by September and be at the BOTI race in Joliet.

I'm going to watch the oil pan gasket for leaks. If it leaks, it is easy to take off and try with no Hondabond.

The build was funded with my own money, which is why I have been working on it the last 2 1/2 years. An engine build like this can cost between $10K and $15K retail. Luckily I've had some help along the way with discounted prices

Any reason why you kept the balance shafts?

For that added ride comfort. Lol. J/K. I think I lost that with the solid mounts and 900lb rear springs. The balance shafts are removed technically. The one you see is cut off after entering the block. I guess I could have cut the snout down too. Its easier than buying the plugs.

Anyone want to give me a H2B kit for free?

Looks like coating failure on the domes around the gas ports.. If it is it was cause by a poorly dgreased piston and oil was trapped into the gas port.. The pic is deceiving and it could just be oil that got there afterwards.

I noticed that too. It was just on the one piston. I'm trying to remember if it was like that when I took them out of the box from Calico. Might have been. I smoothed out the sharp edges on the domes before sending them out to get coated.

I'd like to start it up now, but I have to wait until I get it in the car. Or does anyone know of a Honda compatable engine dyno in the Midwest?

It looks like I'll be waiting until I get it in the car. I'm going a different route with this one and have been talking with Bisi. The H2D kit will be here next week

Stay tuned...
Part 4 - Swap Install
Part 5 - Dyno Tune
Part 6 - Track Test
