Default Lost Motion Assembly

I am purchasing a car with an SiR B16A motor. Apparently from time to time (not so much anymore) there is a ticking coming from cyl #1. Now the seller told me that he was told it was the lost motion assembly. It will tick for a few minutes but once warm, it will go away.

This "hook tool" is pulling one out of a VTEC head just for references. There are apparently 8 total assemblies...2 for each cyl, 1 intake and 1 exhaust. Now I have read that "lack of oil" will cause these suckers to tick. You are supposed to soak them in oil, etc.

Now I can get a new one for $26 from Honda and probably install it myself. Do you think it would be worth my while to do this labor? It really doesn't look too hard, but still...will I be causing damage to anything if I don't replace the "bad one"? I figure if I do replace the "bad one" it will be a good oportunity to change the timing belt and other such things. Feedback?

-ryan

If you want to save money do it yourself, if you feel comfortable with the job. Its only 26 bucks for the part, but if your not confident with doing a valve adjustment or whatever then I wouldn't do it. Its really not hard at all, with the right tools it could take less than an hour. If it doesnt get done it wont really damage anything so I wouldnt worry about it if its tolerable. but then again its only $26.

thats my name

Hold a screw driver up to the valve cover and the listen to the one end, you will be able to tell where its coming from.

lost motion assembly is what keeps the middle rocker from flapping around when not in use.

LMA's take the energy from when the rockers go from low to high lobe (vtec activation)

I know at least one guy on the board here most likely broke a cam shaft because his lma's on his gsr werent strong enought to handle his either toda or jun cams.

put the time and lil money into getting some new lma's
your mistake could cost the price of a new head and bottom end when your valves drop into your cylinder at 8kRPM

you said it goes away after the car warms up? Id leave it alone, not worth the hassle if you dont know exactly what is causing the problem, it may just need a valve adjustment. If you are going to replace them then step up to the ITR LMA's.
