Default Search Not working! Quick ?

Hey, I am installing a coolant temp gauge into a 2000 Civic Si. I need to know where the best place to put the sensor is? I was wonderign if you could just splice into the factory sensor wire...Is that a good idea? Also, which hose would I want to pu the sensor in.....Top or Bottom? Thanks in advance for your help.
