Default Air Conditioning light always on...

Well, on my '01 EX, the air conditioning is always on. Regardless if I'm using the heater or trying to just use the fans, it's always on.

Now, I wouldn't be so interested, if it didn't turn on the compressor, but it does. I don't know if that's supposed to run that way, but I was under the impression that the a/c compressor shouldn't be on during heating, it's kind of a double negative. Also, the compressor does make my fuel mileage go down.

PS. I did a search on both the RSX and the EP3's, to find no information.

Do you have the selector on defrost? If so I beleive the compressor will be on no matter what then.

There is a proceedure that allows you to turn the AC off in the defog/defrost mode.

Might find it doing a search. If not, ping back and I'll look it up.

I posted this a/c defrost cheat code elsewhere (although apparently not on H-T) -- it's worth a try (sorry if I repeat myself in the copy & paste!) :

The key, if you haven't found it yet, is to CONTINUE holding the buttons until the blinking stops.

When you're, um, "activating switchable A/C mode", you:
- turn the ignition key to the Accessory position (just where the radio turns on),
- turn all three ***** all the way to the left,
- press and hold the Recirc and A/C buttons,
- turn the key to ON (no need to start the car; the instrument warning lights should come on),
- CONTINUE to hold the buttons until the Recirc stops blinking and the A/C stays lit.

Once that happens, you should be able to turn off the A/C while the vent **** is in either of the two Defrost positions.

The A/C will automatically re-engage if you turn the vent **** to a non-defrost mode and turn it back to a defrost mode. However, it will remember its last state when you turn off the car -- if you switched to Defrost-without-A/C and turned off the car, the A/C will stay off when you start the car again.

f you have the vent set to, say, face or feet, you can toggle the A/C just like you did before. When you switch to either of the two modes with defrost, the A/C will come on automatically, just like before -- except that now, after entering the code, you can switch the A/C back off.

If you don't turn the mode dial away from either defrost mode, the A/C will stay on or off the next time you start the car, depending on your earlier choice.

It's still a good idea for the A/C system to run occasionally (at least once a week for ten minutes or so) to prevent corrosion of its internal parts. I believe that's what finally happened to the A/C in my '86 Si, and by that time, replacing the whole system would have cost more than the car was worth.

In extremely cold environments, it's not a good thing to have moisture from the system freezing & blocking its drain, hence the dealer-prepped switchable A/C.

So basically what Barracks is trying to say is....

Up Up Down Left X Square Square Triangle Down = God mode for your car.

Of course, I've never tried this on an EX. I know it works on EP's and RSX's, though.
