Finally passed at the Smog Ref.
Well, after 9 long months, i finally got my jdm itr motor swap to pass at the california state smog referee. It has been such a headache but it is finally done and I got the BAR sticker in my door to show all those cops that my **** is legal.
If anyone needs any info on making swaps legal, let me know. I have learned a hell of a lot going through this ordeal.

so why did it take you 9 months? just curious. because, it took me 5 tries to bar my b16 cause i kept failing the damn emissions part. turned out to be just a bad cat.

Might be a newb question, but since I haven't really found any answers.
I wanna do a K20 swap in my 'Teg within the next couple of years. Would that be legal in cali.? I heard from somewhere that it has to pass bar first?

it will never pass, i think it has to do with the fuel return lines.

b18: I too have went before the smog referee numerous times, and I for one, would avoid the smog referee at all costs. Thumbs up on a job well done.

why did you keep failing? I passed on my first try. As long as you have the vacuum lines hooked up correctly and all the OE sensors are plugged in you should pass. Also make sure you are running the correct ECU with the correct motor
Congrats though!

no, they don't take it out because they have to obd2 code read it and if all the readiness tests aren't done, then you fail. All they did was pull the plastic cover to read the number on the ecu. I cheated by putting a p72 circuit board in a p73 case.

You are so lucky. I tried that once and got nailed.

I have a jdm b16a that I'm trying to get passed emissions. Any tips? It's running a chipped p28 ecu. I'm gonna try putting in a stock p28 and seeing how that does.

you need to run a p30 ecu in order to pass, p28s belong to sohc motors.

did you tell the cop you have a type r motor in your gsr? because how the hell would a cop know a gsr from a type r? i know they dont know block numbers at least not around here. i had a b18a in my crx and they called in theyre "street racing inforcement officer" and i had to explain to him how the block numbers work because he was saying that my motor was stolen from japan and he was going to tow it. they look for dual cam motors in single cam cars and motors that say vtec in non vtec cars

what do you need to know? i was an appointment away from reffing my ls crx earlier last year but i managed to get it smogged anyways and traded it instead. basically for example my crx had a 90 integra motor in it. "the crx engine bay must look exactly like a 90 integra engine bay" that is the words straight from a refferee i spoke with over the phone. i had been told by a reputable shop locally that you will get turned away the first time to scare you and the fact that they're not too excited about giving those stickers out to ricer kids so you get 2 tries for $50 including the price of the sticker if you pass. 2nd try they usually pass you unless your **** is wrong/half-assed. people make more of a big deal out of the ref thing then it is.

Actually, from what the ref told me, the only thing keeping the k20 swap from being legal is that fact that you have to use a hondata ecu because the stock ecu has an immobilizer.

No, i didn't tell the cop I had a type r motor. No cop that has ever popped my hood has ever noticed that it isn't the right motor for the car. they just see the b18c and the vtec and assume its gsr. what i got nailed for was i was running an ebay shortram intake. The only reason i was running that intake was that i had hydrolocked twice already and i only ran it in the rain. And guess what. F-ing popo pulled me over and popped my hood in the freaking rain. They wouldn't even let me put my aem on, even though it was in the trunk.

ive had 2 ref tickets so far you should have just payed and not gone to the reff. did you get that notice in the mail of what the fines are if corrected and not corrected? corrected-$250 fine not corrected-$280 lol i didnt think $30 is worth having the ref know what i have and it be on file because they do take pictures of your engine bay. yeah i got busted with that dumbass ebay intake thing too then they were wondering wtf the purple box was with the line connected to the intake(zex box) lol they ended up searching my car and found my 15lbs nitrous bottle hidden under my cargo cover then under the cargo carpet hehehe. but they already wrote me a reff ticket for modifed intake so they just yelled at me for be psyco for having that on the street and how im going to blow up for about a 1/2 hour. after that i used stock integra intake and had been pulled over and the cops never knew the difference they were trying to give me crap for having a fuel pressure gauge thats about it.
