Default EGT probes revisited

Okay ...this is a real stupid newbie..girlie question so forgive me...no flames please...I need to know:

I need to drill a hole in my ex. manifold; is it safe to do it without removing it from the block, or can I do it while its still attached? I figure the the metal shavings would be blown out through the exhaust, ..am I missing something?

It can be done. Usually it's recommended to drill and tap with the engine running. That way all the metal shavings will be blown out.

In any even, the shavings are headed out of the exahust anyways. My only concern would be the metal shavings damaging the turbine... possible?

imo why risk it? dont be lazy, your parts are too expensive to risk over a little saved time.
hell your turbo seals could be leaking ever so slightly and some of those shavings enter the oil, kiss your bearings goodbye.

put it in the downppipe.. and take it off the car to do it... not worth destroying a turbo or crackign a manifold for an EGT probe... if you screw up the manifold, thats a chunk of change compared to a downpipe...

i had it done in my manifold i made sure that there was nothing attachted to it. took the turbo off and unbolted it from my car and brought it to a friend who has some real sharp bits. i did it like that b\c i didnt want any shards getting into the head or getting into the turbo ( i also did the same when i had to get the other o2 sensor installed for my air fuel gauge, took the whole downpipe apart so that nothing can shoot up into the turbo. i have bad luck so it would have happend to me heh)

So now you're saying put it in the DP? Wouldn't that throw the readings off??

I think he means like this:

It works, and the numbers are accurate (it is before the turbo).

But having done both (downpipe flange before turbo AND on the #3 runner) I can tell you that the gauge responds MUCH MUCH faster tapped to the #3 runner on the turbo manifold. Worlds of differnce... From idle I can raise the RPM and just instantly watch the EGT increase.

Pull the turbo, drip and tap into the manifold. Unless you are feeling brave and have extra cash sitting around for a new turbo.

Lessons can be learned through others mistakes, or they can be learned the hard way (no I didnt blow my turbo up like that! lol )

Since my turbo is used it came with two tapped EGT locations. I used the one on the rear since I didn't want to drill a hole and weld a bung into the #3 runner.
