NHRA legal cage - del sol
Alright guys, ive been getting way too many question about this cage so i decided to make a thread specifically about it. This is where im going to send people whenever i get questions, if you want to ask something new thats not covered, feel free to ask, PM me saying to check the page or whatever....
The cage is custom. It took a retarted amount of planning and trying to figure out how to make fit in the car and be NHRA legal.
Im going off of memory here, but i believe the rear bars must be at a 30* min to the main hoop. The rear bars are also allowed to be 4,5,6 iches from the top of the main hoop ( dont remember exactly). The rear window pannel had to be removed so that we could cut the rear 'fire wall' open into the trunk. (just a little at both bottom corners). The rear window pannel (big black thing) also had to be notched to make room for the rear bars.
This is the best pic i have of what im talking about:

If i take out the trunk carpetings, you can actually see the mounting plates and the rear bars partially in the trunk (had to get the min 30*, ended up with 33*)
To put it all back together, one piece on each side had to be cut down the center:

There was no way this piece would fit without cutting it, both pieces had to be put through the tirangle opening in the cage, then put into position. The bottom of these two pieces also had to be trimmed where the main hoop bars go down to the floor (where the fake vent looking stuff is). I also mention up top that i had to make that little backet with a piece of plastic and the two screws to hold the pieces in place, but mostly to keep them from rattling.
On the back of the grey 'speaker covers' the excess plastic that i believe is for directing the sound from the speaker out of the cover had to be removed. I also used as razor blade to remove this, but not until after i had broken a brand new infinity speaker trying to put the covers in place
If you are planning to take your car somewhere and have a cage like this installed, plan on hearing numbers in the $2000 range, if not more.
In these pics, the seats are just thrown in there, so no worries about banging my head on the bar, its just the pics...

General pic..

closer up

Front bars through the carpet. (bolted and welded)

Mounting plate underneath the car for the front bars.

The only two pannels that had to be cut up to make room. I made a little bracket to hold them together so they dont rattle, thats what the screws are for.

Rear shot, sorry i had the window rolled up

General pic..

OK, i made some calls today and found the company that makes these particular swing outs. The company is called: Chris Alston's Chassisworks

this deff gives me hope, since there are no pics of the inside of the trunk, do the bars tie into the rear strut towers or are they mounted up more?
and does the rear window still go down the whole way? lol
looks AMAZING though

question, shouldn't you feed the bolt from the bottom and have the nuts in the interior? maybe have it double nut'd??? i know it's not gonna make the interior look as clean, but i think it's a lot safer so you'd know if those nuts get lose or back out.
btw, are you gonna add a cross bar for harnesses to be wrapped on? and you know this is more a roll bar with door bars than a roll "cage" hehe
but i do like the quick release idea of the door bars.
great planning and fab work.
