Engine Noise - Flapping Sound?! WTF Mate?!
Ok, cliffnotes -
D16Z6, engine is making a wierd noise when the throttle is depressed from 2800RPM on, but this noise goes away when the throttle is released. It sounds as if something is flapping real hard against something else, what you would expect to hear from a piece of paper inserted into a desk fan. Isn't the timing belt, we checked, not the alternator belt.
Possible Ideas
1) Loose Valve
2) LMA's? Do SOHC even have those?
3) Actually something around the timing belt in the cover
4) ...........................Bearing?!
Any ideas, inputs will be welcome. I will be waiting till about 4:00am before I hit the motor to give it adequate time to cool down.

Ok, it is the morning and I have checked the following -
Valve Lash - OK
Timing Belt - OK
Rod Knock - Spark Plug Test - OK
The noise is still there and coming from the area of the flywheel clutch. Could one of the bolt have come loose causing excess chatter when it is engaged?

perhaps screw in the dizzy came off
.
also on my last dizzy cap it was kinda loud but now it sounds fine. have you changed it all (Recently)?
have you checked your fans out? lol I know but didn't see it listed.

-Shane</TD></TR></TABLE> I am feeling for the rotor possibly, but if the bearing inside died I have a spare B7 I can use temporarily (I hate ghetto rigging). I have not changed any of the distributor parts as I have only had the motor running for 6 days. My fan is not the source of the noise, lol, if it made noise every know and then I would feel more comfortable in the fact that it is coming on.

If this was an older RWD car with the fan driven off the motor I could see this as a possibility. But the fan on a Civic is an electronically triggered device that only turns on at certain temperatures. I could get the engine to make noise as soon as I turned it on and revved it after sitting dormant for 6 hours.
I went for the distributor and find the following -
Remove cap, rotor intact but oil has pooled in the bottom of the cap (part closest to transmission)
The black cover that goes underneath the cap and covers the coil and the ignitor is loose which could explain the WHAPWHAPWHAP noise due to harmonic vibrations etc.
The ignitor is covered in oil, the innards all have a light covering of oil.
Bad seal in the distributor? If so, is the distributor junk or can this seal leaking oil be scavenged from another distributor?

I would say yes but you will probably have to take it all apart. EVERYTHING. just mark it and pull of the dizzy to make sure that its just the seal.
I would take everything apart and clean it up real nice. Not sure what to use something non-flammable, and that doesn't leave a residue.

After disassembly and cleaning, I chose to purchase a new distributor. A key factor in my decision was that the input shaft was not only wobbly, could be spun in an ellipse rather then a tight circle.

its what I would have done. </TD></TR></TABLE> I have also come to a startling discovery, when you use an A6/B7 distributor on the Z6 head you have to modify the legs to fit. Well, why not just switch the little tower where the top most bolt mounts? I am talking the piece held on with two bolts and the valve cover holds part of it down.

Yager-</TD></TR></TABLE> Neutral - Quick chatter at 2800 RPM, fades into background
In Gear - Chatter at 2800RPM onward, I am thinking loose pressure plate, clutch assembly. Is that possible?

Update - Drove around some more, noise was apparent from idle onward, when car was decelerating it would be there and when car was idling it made the most dreadful knocking noise. Drove home in 5th, immediatly got car in air and on jackstands and drained the oil. Oil came out nice and thin, slight darkness to the color (less then 600 miles). I had placed three magnets in my catch tray, let it sit for five minutes, then let the oil drain into the bottom of the catch; magnets came back empty so I don't know what the hell to expect when I pull the oil pan off tomorrow.
