Default Here are some pics of my new hybrid d series setup. z6 head/ y8 block

setup:
z6 head: zex valvesprings, zex 59300 cam, arp headstuds
y8 block: stock bottom end
tdo4l wrx turbo
hf manifold
tial 38mm wastegate
dsm bov
jrc 6" intercooler
dsm 450's
uberdata
hondata im gasket
y8 intake manifold
innovate lm1 wideband
etc....

I was running a straight y8 motor with the zex cam, but I got this z6 head with very very low mileage on it. So far it seems to pull even stronger than my y8 motor up top.

sweet looking setup man...how much boost are you running? Also did you notice a big difference in power after adding that ZEX cam to your Y8 head?

yea i'm eventually probably going to paint it black. I just picked up this head and valvecover a few days ago so i haven't had time yet.

I'm running 8-9psi. I noticed a huge difference with the zex cam compared to the stock cam. Particuarly in the top end.

I am using an adjustable str z6 cam gear. Right now i have it set to +3* because for some reason it felt like **** set at 0*. Now that I have added some cam timing it feels much better. Almost as strong as the y8 was in midrange, but with much more top end power. I think i could even add in one more degree of cam timing. Anybody have an idea why my cam timing needs to be advanced like this? Its a z6 cam in a z6 head. I didn't think the block would effect my cam timing.

I used 9 y8 headstuds and 1 z6 headstud. The z6 headstud is needed for the rear left corner.

For those that dont know thats the one that sticks out higher than all the rest... took me a while to figure out that was normal when i recently reassembled my motor. lol

do you think the reason it pulls better is due to higher compression? do you know if your comp ration got changed?

You know that the cam timing will be off 1.5 degrees with that hybrid setup right? (also been rocking y8/z6 for a while now)

P.S. - You got some painting to do. Do the manifold, Valve cover, and chargepipe at least.

Y8's cam gear has 1 tooth more than a Z6's cam gear...that's why when you buy a camgear make sure it's for sohc vtec 92-95 and any seller saying any sohc vtec cam gear can fit any model sohc vtec are dumb asses...

just don't pull too much timing or KABOOM!

the compession on a stock y8 is higher
i beleive these are the follwing compression #'s
stock y8 = 9.6:1
stock z6 = 9.2:1
y8 block and z6 head = 9.3-4:1

yea its slightly higher than a z6, but lower than my y8. Although the z6 head flows way better than the y8

how did you figure out how much cam timing needed to be added? I figured it out after I started it up and it ran like **** down low with the cam timing set at 0*.

Also I just got the valvecover so no time for paint yet. I painted the manifold once and it looked sweet, but the paint came off in 2 days because it wasn't high temp enough, and the charge pipes are painted aluminum color. You probably can't tell by the pics.

It doesn't have 1 tooth more, but the keyway on the y8 gear is advanced 4.5 degrees more than that of a z6 cam gear. I am running a z6 cam gear on this setup.
