Default I thought type R heads were ported and polished??

At least I remember reading somewhere that the intake ports were ported and polished.
We just took a 2001 Integra Type R motor apart, (Jun 3 cams and springs going in) and the intake ports are not ported not polished. you can see the rough casting all the way to the valve seats.
never been touched by human hands.

Did they stop doing it?

Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I saw a Best Motoring where they said the '01's were done by machine (they had a vid. of the machine) ... so not human hands, but still supposedly ported and polished....

You are right. They ar enow machine ported and polished so they can get more of a uniform output from all the engines, and to speed up the assembly line.

I've seen the head off my car with no valves and there was some minimal hand porting around the valve seats in the intake and exhaust ports. I was told that the porting was how they made the B16 head flow as much as the GSR head.

Yeah, I saw the best motoring too. They said that the machines did a better job than any person could do.

the area that is touched up is just before the valve seats, about a one inch deep area, where the casting ridge was grinded away and smoothed up. The actual ports are not opened up like you may think of a traditional p&p job. There really isn't any polishing done to the head. The amount of work done to it is so minimal, I can't believe how much marketing benefit they get over this.

the only porting done is behind the valve guide and some deshrouding in the combustion chamber...thats all that is needed..

so its hand ported...not polished...

According to the owner of Spoon in my Best Motoring video only the very 1st '97 models were hand p&p after that they were all done by machine.

The ITR cylinder head I purchased (a 2000 model year cylinder head) did not have very much work on the intake ports themselves. That being said, the valve seat area did have some work done ...the valve job was a really cheap three-angle, or a really great two-angle, depending on your perspective.

Just my input ...take it for what it's worth.

From dyno charts on this board alone...I've seen many strong 97 ITR's stock wheel HP compare to those of 00 and 01's. I doubt if the machines does a better job than hand.
