Cover up anything you don't want to get wet, such as air filter or distributor. Use A LOT of Simple Green on it. Let it sit for a bit. Spray some more Simple Green. Then use a pressure washer, if you don't have one a house will be ok. Unless your motor is out of your car, I wouldn't get down to the nitty dritty with a toothbrush.

like most people say use any degreaser, hot pressure water works best if not i have cleaned a bunch with water hose after sraying down with degeaser make extra sure engine is turned OFF....in some cars i have seen some water go into the plug hiles so you might want to remove wires and make sure there is no water in plug holes or car will missfire

I used Simple Green sprayed on a slightly warm engine and surrounding parts. Let it sit for a good 5 minutes or more. Spray on some more and use a brush that isn't too stiff to scrub with. Hose it off gently and see what areas need more work. Spray them generously and let the stuff soak for a good 10 minutes. Be patient.

My under hood area looks real good after cleaning it as I just described.
