Default .....my nth turbo casualty. :/

Whip Factory got my clutch/flywheel/motor installed and done Thursday night, I picked it up yesterday. Woo, hoo! I missed the smell of burning oil.

I asked him about my new clutch since he had driven it for a little bit. "Oh, it's like stock." I didn't realize at that point that he was kidding, because the first thing I did was stall it leaving his shop, laughing out loud at myself. The Action 2MD is all that its advertised, smooth and stiff. Once I got used to it it was easier to drive smooth than my 1MD was. I guess my OEM flywheel really did need a resurfacing the first time. (I'm going to go back and edit a couple of my 1MD bashing posts.) 2MD with double the pressure plate is awesome, the Fidanza flywheel lets it rev quicker too.

Bad news, my exhaust turbine wheel is grinding against the housing. At least, that's what it sounds like. That POS made it only 10K miles? Grrr. Now where do I get a new one? Majestic Turbo? Anyone else rebuilding them cheap or selling new ones cheap? I'm not going to bother with a used one unless I can inspect it and it's really cheap. I really liked it so I'm going to stick with the 18G for now.

Oh well, this one still makes b00st, it'll have to do for the next month or two.

-Chris

[Cliff notes, car is back, turbo is shot (turbine touching housing), where do I get a new/rebuilt one?]

.....?

That sucks!

Fwiw, I hear that the gt25 or something will fit the greddy manifold..... rumor that I have not confirmed.

What would cause your exhaust turbing wheel to start grinding like that? Too much heat/ abuse?

oh yeah, btw chris: go ahead and get a 2.5 inch downpipe and test pipe made up while you are at it. my turbo spools up like 500 rpm sooner now!

I had a horrible experience with Majestic Turbo a few years ago with them rebuilding my turbo. The turbo went back and forth 5 times to them and I had to pay for the shipping each time.

OK, I may get a new one from Phoenix Turbo or somewhere.

Actually, yeah, the GT28RS Disco Potato should fit! Maybe I'll try that one, it has ball bearings.

The 18G was getting oil (oil lines are hot) so I figure it was just use/abuse that made it go. It still makes boost, so I'll drive it, but it's kinda crappy that it didn't last that long.

I'll probably get a bigger downpipe... really, I had all the boost I could use with the stock internals, but now I'm looking for a little more so it may be worth it.

You will be really happy with the GT28RS, and it should last a whole lot longer too

Are you using an internal or external gate?

External gate (Tial 38mm). It's hacked onto the top of the GReddy manifold. It works.

I'm trying to figure out damn compressor maps... There's two trims on the GT28RS, I guess the .86 a/r is what I want? (vs. .62).

That stupid 18G was awesome... I'm not really sure the Disco is bigger, but yeah with the ball bearings and super quick spool it's better..

Chris, the .86 has a very broad powerband for its size, which is why it is the most popular. But with the .62, you will see a small increase in response, with a small decrease in peak power. Both will be nearly identical in the midrange.

Were you running an 18G off of an integra greddy kit? Or was it a different trim?

EDIT: Chris, here is the .pdf I've been reading out of lately. Hope it helps:

Greddy 18G.

I've been looking at those maps too.... *shrug*

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1180923

Check this out, with the .62 peak power of 400 WHP at 6000 RPM. That's a lot of power but look at it fall off. Maybe that's enough for me anyway. Strangely enough, the Greddy 18G made a lot more torque on my car at lower RPMs (4000 RPM?)

Well personally, the only turbo I would go with would be the one that would allow me to pull out of a corner better. I see that as the only area of improvement on my car on a track. But I'm F'in lazy and hate downshifting

No but really, the .64 would probably mimick the powerband of the 18G more than the .82. Although, I can't tell you this from personal experience, just from how the compressor maps compare.

Good luck

Chris, since you're road racing the snot out of your setup - you might want to consider a turbo that is both oil and water cooled... just a thought.

I'm not sure if the gt series turbo's are.....

How about a Full-Race AC Manifold and a GT35-R\T3...Damn that would be hot.

Yea Chris, sorry to give you the bad news on that one...It was a familar sound when I used to play with DSMs.

Yeah, well, that'd work too. How much life do you think I have left on that 18G?

Out of reliability, cheap and power tradeoffs, I think I'm starting to shift away from power and more towards cheap/reliable If I can get a turbo that'll bolt up and make a little more power, great. 350 whp is fine with me. I think the GT28RS will work..

Chris did you actually pull the cast elbow off and see if it was hitting the housing. or even take off the intake and see if the compressor side is ok or has shaft play?

with your level of boost the turbo should have lasted way way longer. I have 30K or so total on the turbo I use and it is still almost perfect(knock on wood).

All long stories or even semi long should have cliff notes added from now on. IMO.

Not yet, but I'm going to. It may have died from HPDE's... who knows. I was busy all weekend and didn't get a chance to really check it out.
