Running open downpipe?
Getting ready to install my turbo and what not this weekend. Can't describe how anxious i am starting to get. However, I am getting my exhaust made by a shop in town, and that won't be for a few days after I get my turbo installed. So my question is: Is it okay to run an open downpipe for a few days? What I am worried about is all that hot gas getting trapped under the car. If this is a problem, can i have a shop quickly fab up a pipe to dump the exhaust out the side of the car as a quick fix. I need this car to get to work/school!
thanks all for your help.

3" mandrel bent kits. Don't have a local exhaust shop do a 2.5" crush bent gizmo that will choke off your flow, and you're fine running open DP, you'll just smell like gas.

It'll be loud as ****....I ran open down pipe for one day and it's louder than a Harley Davidson....even with all the windows up....
when I was on the freeway you could hear my turbo spool....and you know how loud a semi-trucks turbo spools...when I was next to the 18 wheeler mine just drowned out his...that trucker was just looking at me like what the **** size turbo are you running....damn little civic....and mines just a 14b...

Haha, that reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Kramer tries to market a cologne that makes you smell like the beach...maybe they could make a cologne that makes you smell like a gas station attendant, that would be cool.
NEWAYS, Thanks for the help guys, I guess i can live with loudness for a while, I just didn't want hot gas melting anything underneath my car. And for the KTeller link, but the shop has the equipment to do mandrel bends.

Re: Running open downpipe? (Pokey)
I've been running open downpipe for 1/2 a year now, and I never smell like exhaust when i get out, nor do I ever smell exhaust when driving around with the windows up or down. The only time I even smell exhaust is if i get out while the car has been idling for a couple minutes. And it's not that loud....

open downpipe is only good when u've got an E or M cutout so u can go from loud and fast to quiet and calm.. This way u get the best of both worlds..
I just finished my setup and I love it..!!

I've been running open dp for about 4 months, it's not all that bad though I'm use to my Thermal 3" Exhaust and open dp is just a lil louder.

im running open downpipe now and i have it coming straight out under the passanger side door. Its pretty loud but i dont have the money to get a whole new exhaust system now. Mine stinks sometimes if im stoped or something but if im driving i dont smell it. I have other things i need before i get a new exhaust. its just hard to be quiet! Even at idle its pretty loud and turns some heads

BTW I've been driving my Civic open DP for a month or so now, it's not TOO bad but it all depends on the size of the DP and where it ends in relation to the cockpit as to whether or not you'll be reeking of fuel or not.

I love hearing "why do you smell like gas?"
Open downpipe is cool for a while, but then it gets old -

Re: Running open downpipe? (HybridHatch88)
Here's a vid clip of me flooring it when I had open DP. Way too loud for me since I couldn't even here when the wastegate opened meaning if there was knock I might not have heard it .

Heard is it when in idle, you can totally hear it spooling down.

Sounds mean as ****, but again too loud. If you want a comparison on loudness, I'd say take off the exhaust from the cat on back so you only run your header and cat. I did this and the loudness is very similar.

Its actually not to loud, very nice deep sound to it. But yet, I couldnt hear my BOV. -=P
Only downside is, smelling like GAS everyday and carbon dioxide isnt good..

Thats pretty ghetto man. I would atleast have it pointing underneath the block. When your a stopped the exhaust gases are just going to come back up into your engine bay and create heat....not to mention shitloads of soot(spelling?).

I'm running an open 3" dp as well and it sounds sick as ****! At idle it is loud but when I get on it, all you here is the turbo spool. I love the looks that people give me when they here it. Good or bad I love it.

No, there is no soot in my engine bay and it is quiet at idle, only loud when I rip it, nothing wrong with that. Oh, and I don't smell like gas either, maybe you guys need some tuning ;^)

My car sounds like a mix between a SRT4 and a semi with open downpipe. Does yours?
