LS/VTEC needs to get smogged. Any Ideas?
I Have 1995 Civic with an LS/Vtec in it that needs to get smogged. The car for some odd reason has a test only referral on it. Does anyone have any ideas or am i pretty much screwed?
You better start looking for a hook up, no way a LS/VTEC will pass Slow Cali's visual, lucky if it passes sniffer but you wont' get that far once they figure out what you have done.
the only ideas i have would be to put an LS head on there and test it as a an LS if the block is a 95 or newer, and put all smog equipment on.

But why wouldnt a LSVTEC pass emissions?

Hrm, Im surprised they would know though. Would do they know its a LSVTEC? I guess they watch for that stuff in CA...never heard of any problems in AZ.
Isnt there a way to fool them? Heh...grind the VTEC off the valve cover?

Ca Ref's have seen and failed a boat load of LSVTEC's.....and yes they pass the sniffer but, they don't pass the visual and........if you just take to a smog station, if there is anything different in the engine compartment, they tell you to take it to a ref.......they will not test it.
Ca does not allow head swaps or any swap what so ever.......pain in the rear.

Well... I called around and found a test only place that will look at it...I took it down a few days ago and they said that Iam just missing a smog part that I can easily get at a junk yard and put it on. He said it will pass visual if I just do that, so I guess I got lucky. Still have to see if itll pass the sniffer though. Any ideas on how to improve the chances of it passing the sniffer????
nwman on this bored has ls vtec in his crx adn he has a bar sticker so there are ways it will pass. Hopefully he will post on this post and clear things up for people who haven't tried to pass an ls vtec.

hey guys ...kinda OT...got a JDM B18C...its suppose to be a 95 but the head says 93...do u think its a early 93 since they first came out in the 94 tegs even in japan..just worrying a little cuz i wonder if the refs will look at that...i was gonna just say its a 94 motor...
The test only place that I found is in La Habra. I told the guy what I had done and at first he told me I had to go to a ref, but then after talking to him he didnt see any problem in testing it as long as the smog equipment was hooked up. He seems pretty legitiment, but doesnt seem likes he knows all the smog rules or he wouldnt have tested it. Does anyone know that if i run 100 octane that the chances of it passing will be better?

My friend with a LSvtec had his car smogged as an LS at a ref tester. He got his BAR sticker, then he did the whole LSvtec thing and now he can smog his LSvtec anywhere with no hassle. Some things he does when he smogs it is, off of a spare valve cover grind down the vtec stuff on it so it is just plain and spray it down with some black high temp paint, hook up all necessary smog crap, set your vtec high so it wont kick in, put the LS computer in or even a sohc ecu, and basically make it look like a integra LS engine bay.
