Black sooty stuff
Sometimes my car will spit out this black sooty stuff. Its like a powder if you touch it. I mainly noticed it when I was running my car without the o2 sensor hooked up. I ran it like that for over a week, car still ran great, just had a check engine light. So when it does happen its usually when I rev the car up high, or sometimes when I just blip the throttle when im under the hood. It doesnt seem to be oil, because its dry when I touch it. It got all over my garage floor the other day when I was working on my car and it came right off the floor.
Anyone know wtf this is? I really don't care much about it since my b16 is going in, in about a month. Oh and if it helps, the car is a 90 Si hatch.

It's called carbon, and it's a result of running rich. Removing the O2 sensor will put the car into open loop, running off the fuel tables in the ecu. These are purposely set rich for power and safety. The water you see is in fact water, a byproduct of combustion: HC + O2 = CO2 + H2O. You may balance this equation if you want, I hate chemistry.

it's not necessarily oil burning when it's like that. from what i understand it's just from running rich. when your mixture is not right, it just produces soot. it just comes out as a nice steamy soot suprise

carbon, but kinda mixes with water, which is a natural byproduct of the combustion process (cold days, water coming from exhausts.) If ya want a quick fix, i was running way too rich for a while, so my friend took out one of my fuel pressure regulator lines, shoved some cheesecloth in it, and plugged it back in. Still runs rich, but doesnt blacken my driveway every morning anymore.

Bump for the fact that this does actually work, and another because i went by my friends house today, and all those guys there had done numerous swaps, conversions, etc, and when I told them about the cheesecloth, it was just <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by drdisco69 »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">

here ya go... took these at night (5:40 local time) so quality isnt the best, but heres a close up shot

-Here I unplugged the vacuum line, folded cheesecloth over 2-3 times, placed over end of line, reconnected. Heres an overall shot.

overall shot of the car, with CX 70 HP motor. I think the reason it blackens the driveway is because I have the 91 SI ECU (PM6 I think) but I am swapping engines soon so I probably wont need this.
I tried just plain disconnecting the lines, which returned the fuel-ratio to normal, but then the idle took a dump (felt like pulling out a spark plug while engine was running type thing.)
Hope this helped!

Question - Why don't you all just drop the fuel pressure a few PSI instead of stuffing cheesecloth in your vacuum lines?
Oh, and this stuff cures a carbon infested engine.. https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1076306

sometimes I scare myself. I'm still waiting to hear a *suck* *BOOM*.
Reason I showed it was because my car is not a race car, I had just bought it, I really didn't know much about it, it was blackeing my driveway, it was a daily driver, a friend suggested we try something, and it worked as a temporary solution.
I have no idea what that does to the performance aspect. This is an alternate route to patching the problem for the short term, and the one which is much less travelled. It does work, and thats why I posted it.
I can also now say that my car runs on cheesecloth. Can't touch this!
