Default How To: Fix leaking CRX roof/hatch *pics*

I decided to finally take on the task of fixing my water leak today after a week of non-stop raining. I figured out it was coming from the cracked seam sealer in the corners of the roof. Water would run down the sheetmetal in the inside of the car into the spare tire well, I could visually watch it run in. Here is my somewhat step by step fix on it. Make sure you have a good full day (6-8 hours) to work on this to do a good job on it.

First, you have to remove the hatch and begin to grind out all of the old seam sealer. It is best to use a 3M grinding/paint removing wheel and a flathead screwdriver in the small areas, a dremel attachment will aslo work here.

Next after you have cleaned the area of dust and debris use Duramix flexible seam sealer to seal the metal. This is probably a lot better than the 14 year old **** in the car already. This cost around $25 a tube, it's a 2 part mixture which you can use a gun to apply it, but I like to apply it to a piece of cardboard and mix it myself and apply it with my fingers (wear rubber gloves) to ensure it gets in all the grooves. It's a self leveling mixture so apply it generously it will all even out. This can also be painted (primed) right on top of.

I will post more pictures tomorrow with some primer on it as well as finishing it up, I ran put of daylight and had to let the seam sealer cure tonight. Enjoy!

Very good stuff!!

GreenMachineRex...I tried clear silicone on my sedan and it ended up cracking out when I applied it on top of paint.

92integra- This isn't for a sunroof car, the seam sealer was just old and cracked in the roof.

The top strip comes out, you have to put them back towards the rear of the car from the front, then they pull up. The rear triangle pieces don't need to come out, the clips break on them.

water can also come through ur taililghts and run into the spare tire well. some of you guys might want to remove ur rear panels and sit in the hatch and have ur friend spray water to see where it's coming from.

UPDATE: It rained like hell tonight, the only water that got in was through the tail lights, still don't know how to fix these, the seam sealer did it's job great.
