I put this post here cause it gets a lot of traffic and I think it will get better/more serious responses than in GDD.

Does anyone have a guide for stuff to check when buying a used car? My parents are going to want whatever car I'm gonna get to get checked out by a mechanic. But it's going to be tough to find someone close enough to me willing to drop if off at the shop to have it checked out. So what should I be looking for and did anyone actually have a mech check their car out before they bought it? I mean it's a smart idea I just don't know if it's feasable. thanks

 

I learned the hard way that you should know the engine code of whatever car you buy. I now inspect cars more carefully after buying a 96 base prelude with a VTEC head and a non vtec block that ran like crap.

I personally check that all electronics work, look for rust and check what fluids I can. On the test drie I would also drive the car to redline in each gear (another lesson I learned the hard way from the Prelude incident) and listen for any strange noises

 

i look for all body work cuz im a ricer.

 

I think the number 1 thing is to do your homework, check the car out, and test drive it in the day time.

 

i suggest you run a carfax to get some info on the car. i think someone in gdd got an account and is willing to run vin's for people. search. but don't believe everything the carfax tells you, but it's better than nothing. drivetrain wise, search on the web or on here about some main things you should look for when buying a used car. good luck in finding the car you want.

p.s. word of advice, take your time. don't rush. took me a month to find my eh2.

 

Have some one who knows about engines (mechanic) to come with ya to make sure every thing is gravy.. Also like said make sure you know what motor is supposed to be in the car and defiantly carf fax it.. Even though my car has been his 1 time that I know of its not on the car fax. but it'll help you out though.

 

When inspecting a used car prior to purchase:
Check exterior for any signs of an accident.
Look over the glass for cracks or chips... the body for dents, dings, rust, and proper fitment between bumpers and body panels
Look under the vehicle for rust also
Check the condition of the paint and the lights.
Look for matching tires and check tire wear.
Check the condition of the wheels.
Look in the interior for any signs of wear or stains...the seats for rips or tears and make sure all of the lights work.
Push all the buttons
Test the climate and radio controls.
Verify the operation of all power options including mirrors, locks, and windows etc.
Check that the seats recline and that the belts work properly
Open the hood and examine the engine.
Remove the radiator cap only when engine is cold and check the fluid's condition. Open the airbox and check the condition of the filter element.
Check transmission fluid level and condition if AUTOMATIC
Check that the VIN's match (motor, firewall, door jam)...
Check the block code and head code for accuracy.
Verify that the core support is straight any that everything in the engine bay appears in place.
Start engine. Make sure it starts right up
Listen for any abnormal noises.
Walk around the vehicle and listen for any exhaust leaks.
Verify that also by giving it some gas.
Make sure all of the exterior lights work and that the doors, trunk, and hood close and latch. shut off the engine.
Look under the car for any leaks.
Wait a minute and check the oil level and color.
Push down on the front/rear of the car and let off to see the condition of the suspension
Take it for a test drive
Verify the speedometers operation and tachometer etc.
test its acceleration and braking in different conditions safely
listen for any noises related to braking/accelerating/suspension that seem un-natural
listen for any wind noise or vibrations with the windows up
once you are satisfied and have a feel and understanding of the car shut it off and again check for leaks
get all records you can
make sure title is clean
carfax is good
if no records available drop offer at least $500 (cause once you buy it and you remove the valve cover and see that the timing belt needs replacing as well as the water pump you have some work to do! which hopefully won't happen)

That's a comprehensive list. I just avoided all that by buying a rolling chassis and ordering a full swap. What to look for depends on what you're planning for the car. If you want a project, look for a car that's damaged enough in the areas you plan on replacing to drive the price down. If you know you're swapping, you don't care about the motor... If you plan on adding a stereo, it doesn't matter if the one in the car works....

there is 5th gen lude., I might buy 97 SH red 88k 6100 $. Also this car has small dent on the front hood from hitting box in the garage. $300 is the estimate from body shop to repair.
