Default Are your rebuilt B18c's and c5's still burning oil?

I've done a search on this but my question is this, I have a 96 spec b18c ITR motor in my Sol. When I got the motor I changed everything out. I changed the bottom end with a balanced Spoon setup and I used the stock bumpsticks mated to a Skunk2 valvetrain. Nothing was oversized. I was wondering if everything was replaced why do I still smell oil burning when I stop my car after being in high revs? The smell is very prominenet in the Sol cause the rear window goes down and I know I smell oil. Is there anything that can be done to stop this? Again if everything is replaced with OEM parts or better what can be the culprit of the oil buring? There is no smoke outta the exhaust either. Does running a straight pipe for the cat make the smell more noticeable (due to lack of cat) on anybody elses setup? Thank you in advance.

Search this forum for "burning oil", and you'll find that almost every R here burns oil. (note: I said almost )

I did the search and saw the many results but my question is, is there a certain culprit that causes it too burn oil, even on a fresh motor?

I just rebuild my motor and still burn oil. I'm convinced the cars in general are just destined to do that, as sort of a sacrifice to the gods of hard driving...

I'm sorry to bring this post up again but while changing the oil today on my Sol (b18c) I noted something very strange. I changed my oil around two to three weeks ago and I knew I was burning a lil oil so i just put 5 quarts in of Mobil 1 10w-40. Well when I changed my oil today I may have, if I was lucky, got two quarts of oil out???? So in a matter of two weeks or so I burned almost 3 quarts of oil!!???? Despite a lot of R's burning oil this simply cannot be right. i had a B16a2 out of the factory and I drove that harder then I do with my b18c and it never burned a drop.I drive my car hard but nothing crazy at all. Again there is no smoke pluming out of the exhaust, comression is good and I even dynoed her and made 180hp w/the obd2 ecu so agian I ask, what could be causing the massive oil consumption. i've read a lot of old threads in this forum and am still at a loss on what to do. Can anyone tell me what the problem can be. If all else fails, I guess i'll take her to King Motorsports and have them tear it down and put her back together. Thanks for the help in advance.

After much more searchin I realized that most people are either contempt that their r's burn oil or it seems that everyone thinks this is normal. I however am not cool with this whole oil burning issue. Theres surely something wrong (valve guides, rings, etc). I am wondering if anyone's R has consumed this much oil as mine and actually had the problem fixed. I apologize again for bringing this back up, but it's on my mind a lot.

IMO, you should be talking with your engine builder instead of a messageboard.

If you're unhappy with the build, make them re-examine it.

thanks but at this point when I do take her out again I will take her to King Motorsports where they claim they have no oil burning problems with their R's. I just need to know who else has had this problem and if they ever fixed it.

I never burned as much as you, the worst I had was maybe a quart/week. That required a rebuild, and was not "normal" by any means. You'll most likely have to do the same. King definitely knows their stuff, and has super top notch products and service, you can't go wrong with them I would advise getting it checked out (leakdown and compression test first, then maybe something more substantial, pulling the head maybe?) sort of soon, before something worse happens and you wind up damaging the block.

I was using Mobile Oil also and it burned ALOT faster than ROYAL PURPLE which i use now. It is about the same cost and is supposed to give your a few extra horses....I also have no CAT with my Type R and i dynoed at 187 w obd1. I burn oil which i read was commen with Type R but its about a quart every 3-4 weeks depends how much i take it up and how often.

i was carefull to check my car the first time i got it out to the track.

well after 2 days of laping and staying in vtec about 90% of the time, i had no oil loss at all, i was very happy. and it makes me belive even more that the 10,000 miles my engine was said to have by the seller is correct

Same here. My engine has almost 70,000 miles, and it doesnt burn much at all even at trackdays.

Did you have your engine bored out? If your rings arent seating, thats the only fix I know of.

Also, how did you break your engine in?

Unless I am misunderstanding you..... you said you put in a brand new Spoon shortblock.

Then you noticed the oil burning smell..... you followed up by stating you used Mobil 1 oil.

You never mentioned how many kms you put on the motor before you switched to synthetic or did you use synthetic straight from the start for break-in?

Also, you never said anything about working on your cylinder head. Did you have the valve seals changed?

Another thing I noticed is that motors that were broken in "easily" - driving 2500kms with a long warm up period every morning and not exceeding 3000rpm tend to burn oil. Warm the motor up lightly, drive it around to get all fluids up to operating temp and rip on it.

Don't you mean tend "not" to burn oil?

Nope....I meant what I said.....

It's not scientific but a lot of others may agree as well.

Case 1:

Had a buddy with a 98 Prelude that just babied it with long warm ups and didn't even hit VTEC till almost 5000kms!

Friend number 2 didn't even know how to drive standard and knew nothing about cars and just RIPPED on his Prelude starting from Day 1 off the lot.

When they finally both got rid of their cars, car number 2 would still run a faster time in drags and burn almost no oil. This car was STOCK compared to car #1 which had the full I/H/E + tuned VAFC.

Case 2 also with a 98Prelude:
Drove almost 8hours on the same highway varying RPMs and loads with another friend to break in the car and that by far -in this HIGHLY UNscientific excercise- proved to be the strongest of the 3 and burned the least amount of oil.

Then YEARS later I stumbled across this website:
http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

My R was broken in somewhat easily and it burns oil probably not because of the break-in but how I abused it..... but the new motor I intend to build will not get it easy from the beginning either....

No, it is not a SPoon short block, it's a 96 R b18c with Spoon rods and pistons and a skunk2 valvetrain with stock camshafts. The head was dissaembled and I had everything replaced. Did a compression check and had 240 across ecxept for cylinder 3 which was at 225. I spent a good coin trying to make a decent reliable motor and all i've got is a big headache. Like I said earlier if the shop I currently use cannot resolve the problem i'm off to King Motorsports in Wisconsin. This will be the 4th shop my car has traveled to. My car's becoming a shop *****. One day i'll actually be able to enjoy my car, and BTW my CEL just popped up today.
