The Best Oil? Did some Research...
I know, another oil thread, but I've been doing some research.
Check out the following links.
After reading this, I began looking for more sources.

Then I came across this:
oil. http://www.bestsyntheticoil.co...3.pdf
Valvoline SynPower 10w30 was rated better than Mobil1 SuperSyn, Castrol Syntec, Royal Purple, Redline, and regular Amsoil XL7500. Seems to me Valvoline SynPower is the best oil available at your local auto part stores. I'm a new Valvoline SynPower fan.

From what I've read Valvoline Synpower has good UOA numbers, but is also fairly expensive at ~ $4.70/qt.
For my 94 LS, I'm using Chevron Supreme 10W-30 dino that only costs $0.69/qt. Though it's an unexpensive oil, it has UOA's numbers better than more expensive oils.

I think you better check again... Valvoline does not top AMSOIL 10w30 Synthetic. Although it does slightly edge out the Amsoil XL7500. C'mon.. now the XL7500 is a 7500 mi interval oil change or every 6 months. It's also formulated for new vehicles. Although the XL7500 is impressive... it does not top the Amsoil 10w30 synthetic formula which is for regular oil change intervals.
The graph shows Amsoil 10w30 scoring a 742 points vs. Valvoline SynPower 10w30 at 727 points...
So Valvoline still gets a

I wouldn't go that far. It's a damn good oil, and way easier to get a hold of than AMSoil.

SynPower has +5 points over Amsoil XL7500 under 10w30... Synpower is also readily available at a local Autozone, Amsoil isn't. My original point was, Synpower is probably the best oil you're going to find at your local auto part store.

And your point is? I believe Valvoline is also a good oil and is widely available just about everywhere. But it does not top the Amsoil 10w30 Synthetic formula.
If Amsoil wasn't available to me, I definately jump on the Valvoline. But then again I've known this for a long time and have been using Valvoline before I switched over to Amsoil a few years back.
Most people don't use the XL7500... like I said it is for 7500 Mi or 6months interval oil changes. I change my oil every 3K mi. or 3 months, depends on which ever comes first.

The XL7500 is for shorter drain intervals than the standard AMSoil synthetic (which explains why it scores slightly lower) . . . . it's a complete waste to change any oil every 3k, much less something as good as a true synthetic. Heck, AMSoil advertises 25k mile drain intervals . . . .
Send it out to Blackstone labs, and ask for a TBN - they'll tell you the same thing.

True.. actually the standard Amsoil Synthetic is suppose to go up to 25K Mi or 1 year intervals. Let me ask you something..? Do you track or race your car?
Do you not drive it out of the normal conditions? Do you at least beat on your car, ( I run my daily to 8500 rpms!) I suppose you want to race your car on the track for about 6months before changing the oil? I think not... so in thinking it is well worth your time to change your oil when it's dirty or wearing out to help keep it fresh. Believe me if you tell a customer buying a brand new car at the dealership and told them they didn't have to change the oil for 1 year chances are they probably look at you like your the dumbest person on earth!
Amsoil have been advertising 25K oil drain intervals for over 20-30 yrs now... is that a surprised? So in saying I guess you can do so.. but why? Meaning the long oil change interval thingy... Technology is good... but not great.
Lastly let's not forget that Amsoil accels in every other test category and not just the 4 ball wear test. Are we forgetting something here? It is still the best all around oil... period.

well...this is my theory from the Beast from the East. I use Pennzoil 5w-30 ... UNLIKE my cousin ... the avid Valvoline user...I have had no leaks, drips, or loss of product. Maybe the 2 years in automotive technologies...back in highschool did pay off ^_^
Always make a very informed decision.

what about contamination from blowby? i havent seen anyone bring this up before. unless you assume everyone has outstanding compression, everyone's oil will be contaminated at a different rate.
do the oil manufacturers consider contamination when suggesting these intervals?
if we know we are getting excessive blowby, how much sooner should you change the oil?
btw, oil turning dark from some contamination is normal.

I run Honda 5w20. Why? Because I work at a dealership and it's free. My B16 88 hatch gets 3mpg more with 5w20 over 5w30. If I had an extremely modified engine, I would go back to my favorite high performance oil combo, which is uncommon but hate all you want... 3 quarts of OEM Honda 0w20 and 1 quart of Mobil1 5w30.
