Default 1991 Accord windshield wiper problem? HELP !!!!

When my windshield wipers are not on I can grab them and there is about a 2.5 in. play in the movement of them up and down. I checked my buddy's 94 and he had 0 play in his. Anyone have any ideals if this could be the motor or linkage? THanks for your time.

Your wiper transmission has some play in it but it's really no big deal unless it quits working. You can replace the joints in the transmission or just buy a new one.

your motor is probably fine. just put a new transmission on it and you'll be fine

The problem is in one of the two rods that connect the motor/two wipers. There are teflon type inserts that pivot on a fixed ball. The teflon has worn out. You will have to find out which one of the two rods has the bad insert (usually the one directly attached to the motor). It will cost you about $20 for the whole arm, the teflon insert is molded onto the aluminum rod. Ive tried to fix broken ones but it is an exercise in futility.
Be careful when ordering the new one from your dealership the parts breakdown is not very detailed and the two can be easily mixed up, and they are different lengths. Or go to a junkyard and find one, only accord of that gen will fit.

Oh, I've assumed that you know to take the wipers off, and then the plastic shroud under the windshield. If you have any problems with that give another holler. cheers!

I've seen this more than once, on a 90 and on a very high milage 97, the problem will be as I described. If left unchecked it will eventually fall off and you will have no wipers. more than anything is the anoying slop in the wipers as they hop over the window or start cleaning the window trim. Real sloppy and annoying!

back from the dead... when taking the actual wiper arm off.. I have the nut off of the top, then do I just have to pry the arm off? mine is on there pretty tight and I sprayed some wd40 on them so will try again. I don't like to use excessive force unless i know thats what im supposed to be doing. anybody have insight?

I took off mine last weekend to repaint them. I did mine with the hood open, and I had to apply some force to the spring to balance out the force on it and lift up. After I did mine, I found this easier instructions. Just do it with the hood closed and lift up the arms like you are cleaning the windshield and just lift them straight up.

Check out the link for more instructions.
