The thread point on my B-series transmission case for one of the mount studs broke off (along the threaded hole).

With this being a load-bearing area, and with this case being so old, can this be welded back together and then re-tapped?

anything can be welded, but with something that is thick and made from cast aluminum, it will need to be heated up first and slowly cooled to stop from cracking

OK, thanks for the info.

I have found a custom welding shop that says that they can do it, so I'll ask them how they will heat the housing and cool it.

typically the process would be to heat it in an industrial oven, remove, make a pass, put it back in the oven, then do it all over again however many times you have to to build up the weld, then put it back in the oven and slowly decrease the heat. to some of the more paranoid welders, could be roughly a 2 day job

replacement case may be more cost effective and quicker depending on the availability in your area.

Do you have a small-spline cable (90-91) or a 92-01 transmission?

If you have a 92-01, ANY 92-01 B series case half will fit. LS, B16, GSR, Type R. A case half is usually pretty easy to find used.

If you have the earlier 90-91 transmission, you will need a case half from another 90-91 transmission. But they are much harder to come by. It is usually easier to buy a complete transmission for the price someone would want for a case half...


Whatever the case may be, when you replace it (or swap your internals into another complete case) you must check your mainshaft and differential thrust clearances, and re-shim if out of spec.

F22Master - I have a S80 hydro transmission (92-01). I have been looking for a case half from the online junkyards, but no luck so far. Are there other sources?

I would be taking the case half off, whether I get the original case half welded, or if I am lucky enough to eventually get a used one. Now, thanks to posting here and getting help, I know that I should check my mainshaft and differential thrust clearances while I have everything apart. Thanks!

I have a case half that you can HAVE for the cost of shipping but it's got an issue too. The threads that the counter shaft c-clip retaining plug threads into are FUBAR. It'll hold fine with some Hondabond to seal it (thats how the previous owner was using it for however long, tack welded and Hondabonded) if you wanna go that route.


Otherwise I'm just going to bring it to the scrap guy for some change.
