I'm a tire technician and stretching the tires is 100% unsafe, you can go into a corner with low air pressure and blow the bead on the tire.

No, that should be fine hiproof.

I am also against tire stretching but if that's what he wants so be it, i personally think tire stretching in excess looks stupid but i'd rather help and not flame.

Poke 'n stretch, huh gangsta?

That has to be one of the *dumbest* trends I've seen in the past 15 years or so, and there have certainly been some dumb ones. Don't forget this is an old VW trend, too.

Oh, and let me know when your boy takes a hard turn, pops a bead and the car ends up in the median or on a tree.

Darwinism is great, as long as the moron doesn't take a life with him.

Quick question, where do you find 185/40s? All I've been able to locate is 195/45/15 and then 165/45/15 as the next smallest.

Funny how a thread like this would get locked in Wheel and Tire, but here it remains open. Stretching tires is unsafe, ugly, and serves no useful purpose. This has nothing to do with "to each his own", it is just dangerous.

A friend of mine owns a fabrication shop here in town and drifts his LS1 swapped 240sx quite frequently with super stretched tires. In fact, if you goto any drift event you will find that many people drift with stretched tires. Drifting, obviously causes quicker tire wear and more stress on the wheels and tires, yet I've never heard of any one having any safety issues due to running stretched tires alone.

As for it being "ugly", or not serving any purpose, those are both opinions of yours and really have no place here.

The only idiots are people who would do something unsafe to their cars, and taking on a serious risk of a tire popping the bead. Every tire manufacturer receives numerous reports (even attempted warranty claims, LOL!) of tires popping the bead when mounted on wheels that are wider than the widths approved in the tire manufacturer's specs. It happens, and there's no reason to take on that risk. Get tires mounted on wheels with a width on which they were designed to be mounted.

Stretching tires is UNSAFE. Period. End of story. That's why we don't allow the discussion of tire stretching in the Wheel and Tire forum.
