205-45-16 is the correct size for your car!

205-40-16 is for pre-95 civics and pre-93 integras!

So you did the right thing!

Sorry, but I think the answers above are mistaken. You should be using 205/40-16. EDIT - But this may not be true for Canadian models. See below.

'96 was the year that Honda switched tire sizes, but only on some Civic models. In the United States, '96 Civics came with two different tire sizes. The hatchback and DX models in '96 came with 175/70-13 tires stock, and 205/40-16 would be the best matching 16" size for those cars (as well as all pre-'96 Civics). All other Civics came with 185/65-14 tires stock, and 205/45-16 (or 215/45-16) would be the best matching 16" size for those models (as well as all '97-00 Civics). 205/45-16 is also the best matching 16" size for Integras, ALL years.

Maybe the models sold in Canada are different, but I doubt it.

EDIT - If your car came from the factory with 175/70-13 or 185/60-14 tires, get 205/40-16. If it came with 185/65-14 tires, get 205/45-16 (or 215/45-16).

Personally, although I agree that the mileage on the odometer would be more accurate, I'd much rather have a tire that rode better. Especially, when the difference is only 3% between the two tire sizes.

If ride comfort is a priority, you're MUCH better off getting smaller wheels with the proper size tires - e.g. 195/50-15 on 15" wheels or 185/60-14 tires on 14" wheels - rather than using the wrong size tires on 16" wheels.

For the canadian model 96 civic, they come with the 185-65-14. So I was basing myself on that! But we are both right and both wrong!

to you for being on top of things!!!!!!

Very good point. I think 15's look better on a '96 - '00, as well.

Is that all Canadian civics (hatches, coupes, and other)?

I was not aware of differences in tire sizes between the USIM and CIM models. Regardless, the note I added to my post above applies:
