How do offsets work?

What is the offset and how does it effect the look of your rim on your car?

A larger offset sets your wheels farther in towards the center of the car. Then you worry about rubbing against the springs.

A smaller offset sets your tires farther out. Then you worry about rubbing against your fenders.
