when to back purge?
You may not need to back purge your tacks but you will want to on your root pass. sch 10 is thin enough that you wont need to do any more welding than that as long as your root gap was not too big (I would say no greater than 1/32). use tape and weld the tubes one quarter at a time. remove the tape as you go this will ensure good gas coverage and you wont have to turn your back purging cfm up so high. good luck and even though you want it to be nice its not the end of the world if it sugars a little.
sigh...
dude by the time everyone gets done giving you their opinion on the matter you are going to be so effing confused and frustrated.
I'll save you some confusion and not chime in. Read the first 5 pages of this forum and I'm sure you'll come across at least one thread where we all got into an argument about backpurging, single vs multiple passes and root gap. Form your own opinion from there.

Yeah, that's a fact. Everyone has their opinion on how it HAS to be done...OR ELSE. Deal is though, many people do it different ways without any issues.
