I use a 7" x 12" band saw for all my cutting around the shop, However it pretty much strickly a horizontal bandsaw which means you cant free hand cut parts, they need to be clamped to the table. It cuts through everything i throw at it, solid stainless steel bars, aluminum, mild steel bars, stainless, mild, and alum tubing, everything. Its a 1HP.

Any of the 4"x6" bandsaws that you can get for $175-$250 work pretty well and should do the job. I like this one from Grizzly http://www.grizzly.com/product...G1010

The problem with the models you buy in the store is that they are all made for wood. Metal bandsaw turn at a much slower speed than wood. The cheapest Craftsman vert Metal bandsaw is around $900. I paid a little over that for the Wilton.

That is the one i was looking at but the table size seems a bit small, but over all it seems like a good deal for what you get.

A lot of people say the HF bandsaw is crap. Well one of those built my car, in sig, so I can't say much bad about it. Yeah the stand is flimsy, but it does fine otherwise. The biggest complaint I hear from "real" machinists/fabricators is, "that thing wouldn't last a day in my shop." No it wouldn't, but it isn't *in* your shop, it's in my garage where it's lasted years. Sure I'd like a $1200 "real" one, but I have neither the space nor money.

Ive seen the HF saw in person at the HF saw, it looks decent enough for the money, the only bad part is the vertical table, its really only like 6" square, but you can make one out of scrap plate or something. There are alot of modifications people make to that saw, just search the web and im sure youll find alot of info on it.
