I was told to use 4043 filler in valve covers.. I know this isn't going to help your problem but i had a cover crack on me and was told it was due to me using 5356 rod

Thinking about it some more I have a theory as to why it got so bad. When I first started this VC i attempted to weld the bung on the outside first. In doing that is it possible that I pulled the oil through the aluminum from the inside out and in a sense, completely saturating it all the way through?

it doesn't matter which side you start from, the oil will surface regardless of which side you start welding on. I only weld the front side of valve covers. Just heat the aluminum in like the above people are suggesting. I think you're thinking too much.

I agree. But It is pretty frustrating when you can't figure out why your weld puddle is crap.

Just take it to a powder coating shop and have them run it through their burn out oven.

Exactly what I was thinking...

And I'm sure I'm over thinking it... I'm just gonna put all the things ive learned together on my next one
