Default Structural aluminum tubing...anyone know of a good place to get it?

I am looking for some high strength aluminum tube. Not incredible wall thickness, but something with a center spar. Oval shaped stuff would be nice too. Anyone know where to get stuff like that?

Seriously....the local phone book. If they don't have it the person they recommend you to should have it or be able to get it. Tracking down materials isn't that hard.

PS we have an entire thread dedicated to material suppliers etc...

Well, I guess if you lived down the street from me, then your facts on local business supplies would matter. I've searched quite extensively, and the suppliers in the area either only deal wholesale to storefronts, or are overpriced as hell. I've even approached a few machine shops, and they ship product in, and won't resell to me unless I order a substantial amount.

I also checked several online suppliers I use, but none of them carry what I'm looking for. So your assumption that I haven't searched is false.

I checked online metals, but maybe I missed it. I got tig wire from aircraftspruce before....have to check them out....thanks.

Edit: Nope...checked both sites and neither have it. Aircraft spruce has some tubing for struts, but it's more of a teardrop shape than oval. Guess I'll keep lookin around.

doesn't look like they have oval, but they have a decent selection. we have them local to us, and they are actually pretty reasonable on prices here.

After searching further, I suppose it's extruded tube that I need. I actually want something that's somewhat football shaped. The aircraft struts are really close in shape, but the cost of those are high.

I found some places that do custom shaped extruded tube, but I'm sure the quantity you have to purchase is fairly high.

a run of custom tube would be about 500lbs of material + the cost of the die if they don't already have it + setup

Try architectural supply places - that stuff gets spec'd for railings, etc.

Our shop is tied in with a metal fabrication facility that has TONS of extrusions and structural aluminum, if you can get me a detailed drawing of it, I can most likely get it within a day, at cost too!

Not seein it man....they've got the same stuff I've been finding...hexagons, channels, round tube, square tube, rod, etc.

Probably a couple sticks of a couple feet a piece. Something I could buy on an "as needed" basis.

I'm heading to the shop tomorrow, I'll see what I can find. Any special wall thickness or grade?

Ehhh.... 1/8" thick would be fine...it's hard to say though. I guess it'd just come down to what you have. Let me know.

I think you might be right but its worth a try.

Or how about trying to find out what company they get it from?

Still searching for this tubing...got a good *** product idea, but I can't use round tube. I need something with a streamlined shape.
