How do you reuse a roll cage? do you cut it out?

the car in the pic is getting cut apart and the cage will come out as 1 piece.the cage will then be cut up at the welds cleaned up and re welded into the other car

J/w did you break your nose on a bar that was covered in padding? (yes i know that wouldn't make that much of a difference) just wondering.

I dont know if I would feel secure knowing that my cage has already been in one serious accident....not to mention that the bars are at least tweaked a little bit and they probaly wont fit the same in the new car....I dunno though, let us know how it turns out

im sorry but that retarted... why wouldnt you just build a new one? a good cage cant just be cut out and put back in that easily...

the more reinforcements the better imo... it also comes down to other things such as customer convienence, cost and what they are trying to get out fo the car. gussets add so much as well. here's one we're in the middle of @ the shop. FWIW i wonder how a roof like this would hold up to the same collision as the first car. I do not see the roof caving in the way it did.

This is my good friends car, I was looking at it while the turbo was still hot. This bar was the first that a guy I know ever installed, just a shelf S&W moly kit and it held up great, obviously this car did not have a full 10pt it was just a 6pt or it would probably look alot better up front.

Thanks for starting this post! I tried making a post a couple years ago in the road race forum when we where working on the cage design for my EG. I wanted to see wrecked pics to see what worked and what didn't. The mods got all pissy because they didn't want pictures of wrecked cars to act as a deterrent to members of the forum. I'm glad this post hasn't been locked and you haven't been banned...yet.

[EDIT] From an engineering standpoint, I agree with the other users on the guy reusing his role-cage. When a cage goes through a shock like that, you will get micro-fractures all over the place that are not going to be visible with the naked eye. Definitely a bad idea imo.

That guy is seriously an idiot if he is re-using the cage, I have no idea why someone would do that after a near death experience.

No money is worth someones life.

the drivers area of the car isnt bent at all if it were i would not use the cage. when the cage comes out of the old car if there is any distortion in the cage i will not use it. i am not reusing a bent cage

Crush a straight pop can.

Now put a tiny dimple in another can and crush it. Easier huh?

I don't understand why the a-pillar bars were so far away from the A-pillars. I also don't understand why the a-pillar bars weren't tied into the a-pillars with some reinforcement plates.

It was never rolled, but it was in a hard impact. If the force of the impact tweaked any other part of the cage even an 1/8", then you now have a point of failure similar to the dimple in the coke can example. And as I have mentioned, chances are every weld in that cage is going to have micro-fractures from the force traveling through the chassis during impact. Even if you cut the bars out, grind off the old welds and reweld, the weld point itself is going to still be stressed.
So in the event of another collision, the cage is going to buckle at it's weakest point, which in reused tubing, could be anywhere. Just not worth the risk imo.
I think the other point is, for the time given to cut the cage out, re-prep it and reinstall it, you could just put in a new cage altogether.
I think taking the cage and using it as a template is a great idea. But reinstalling bar stock that has been in a collision just doesn't sit well for most of us.

roof might not cave in as much but more damage would be done...

That seat is TOUCHING the top hoop, that isn't good in more ways then 1....

Actually the seat isnt its final palce in that pic tom posted, it is about 4" lower then that. That is how the mounting brackets come from sparco and the seat is just rediculously high. We made new brackets that brings the seat to the correct level.
