so again i will state- if you are looking to build a cage, at least look over FIA article 253, and build as much cage as you can.

I'm thinking the bar probably slid his helmet forward. Your head is already pretty far forward from the rear of the seat, but still.

And to poster of the white civic, this is why I strongly believe in cages for anyone who drives hard on the street. I have one in my Jetta, and it has never, ever been on a track.

FYI: The driver was medivac'd to hospital, survived, and is currently rebuilding that car with a new chassis. There's a lot more information over on BimmerForums; sorry, but I don't have the link right now.

Wow! Thanks for posting that , and props to him for posting the pictures! Too many road race guys are too embarrassed to post crash pictures.

I wonder if that was ERW

DOM. Here's a post I made about this elsewhere:
Driver survived after being airlifted out, then went back to rebuilding the car in a new chassis. Cage was completely constructed of "1.750” x 0.120” seamless mild steel (DOM)".

http://www.motorgeek.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=21475
http://www.nasaforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=22187
http://www.nasaforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=22198

The build thread for that car seems to be here (on page 10, he posts up about the accident, and page 11 has the pictures you posted above):

http://www.motorgeek.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=16273

Page 12 and 13 is where he starts talking about the cage, and posting more pictures. A couple of pictures of the cage with the roof removed:

http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/f...e/IMG_1677.jpg
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/f...e/IMG_1678.jpg

I got a link to some of that from BimmerForums discussion of cages and crash results:

I guess they don't know that DOM is not seamless.

Glad to hear he is okay!

He didn't just go off, he went WAY off. The roof went directly into a tree, right where that perfectly round dip is.

what are your thoughts on what a caged car will do to a non-caged car? I would put a cage in my car but if I smash into someone and their car gets destroyed because it absorbs all of the impulse and my car absorbs none which results in them getting obliterated im going to feel pretty bad.

Yes, that's a good point. I think as long as the front end of the car isn't reinforced, (ie: the frame rails in front etc ...) you are still absorbing some of the impact in a head on.

Wow...glad to hear the driver is ok. I was actually going to ask based on where that roof bar ended up...there isn't a lot of room for a head between the bar and the seat

Ouch, so what kind of caging should be done to prevent this?

Your roof hitting an immovable object like a giant oak tree is getting caved in no matter how serious the cage....this was just bad luck.

By no means am I an expert in cage design, but I think adding the vertical a-pillar reinforcements, along with the main rollbar to top bar brace would have helped tremendously.

There is a lot of space between that car's unibody and the frame some gussets would be a great add on that way they work together -_-.
