Here's an exhaust repair I did on a friend's car. The guy who sold him the exhaust couldn't fit it in the box he had, so he chopped the b-pipe in half. Looks like he used a butter knife.

Before

After (Gas welder)

Here's a pic that my dad took last night while I was practicing gas welding a pipe to a flange.

As you can see, gas welding puts an enormous amount of heat into the whole flange. I have to grind them flat again after welding.

it's not easy and it's not hard....

I love oxycetylene.

The funny thing is, everybody says my oxycetylene looks nice and should jsut stick with that, but My heart is set on a TIG welder. I'm sure Sonny is the same way

Hey I got a question for you guys. How do you guys make the holes on the flange on the head side of your manifolds? Do you just cut it with a torch and clean it up later or is there something else that I am missing? (assuming you make yours in house that is)

a torch is nice, but plasma cutter is blingin' and the way to go.

With flanges going so cheap nowadays, there is no need to have them made in house

Paul,

Yup...I'm set on a TIG. In fact, I got one last week....Miller Dialarc 250. Gonna have to do some electrical work to get that bad boy to work in my garage, but the price was right.

I love my oxyacetylene setup. TIG is real nice to weld stainless and aluminum with though. That's one of the main reasons I wanted to get one.

Paul,

Yeah, I got it used. My budget was ~1500. That left me with 3 choices:

1) Thermal Arc 185 TSW (inverter)
2) Miller Syncrowave 180 SD (transformer) or Lincoln Squarewave 175 Pro (transformer)
3) Older Miller Dialarc 250 or Older Lincoln Idealarc 250

I chose not to get the Thermal Arc because even though it's an awesome machine, support for is questionable when compared to Lincoln and Miller. The longevity of the newer inverters has also yet to be proven.

The Lincoln is simply outclassed in this comparison. It can barely do 125 amps at 40% duty cycle and it only comes with a 90 amp torch.

So that left either the old Miller or the new Miller. I chose the old one because for the same amount of money, I could get a lot more welding power (250 amps vs 180 amps).

Sonny, do they offer a TIG accessory for the Dialarc? Something that will allow HF starts and a foot control?

Paul: The Dialarc HF is the machine you want. It's a stick/TIG machine that will do everything you're asking for. This setup is pretty much identical to the one that I just bought. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISA...&rd=1

sporkcrx: lol...thanks.

wtf. I've never seen such coins.

I engineer drawings for a shop that strictly welds aluminum.
That was with joining two different steels, right ?
What $$setup was that done with?

How much gas pressure are you supposed to use with a MIG setup?

MAN! Aluminum pisses me off . i can amke some damn good welds with steels, but when i flick that switch to AC it seems like i have to start all over skill wise. Its so much different. I mean stainless dumpipes and downpipes, or mild steel intercooler pipes, no prob, hell my welds even pentrate awesome and look good. But ALUM. is a toally different ball game. Sometimes after i burn through a few elctrodes on the AL, il switch over to steel and i feel alot better . Its comin along though...

This thread helped me out alot tonight... I'll have the pics of me welding and my downpipe in the morning... its still not completely done... I still have to grind down the welds a bit to clean them up, and then paint the downpipe, but for now, this downpipe is open dump... hehehehe
