Default Mig'ing a testpipe out of scrap

I want to make a test pipe out of some scrap i have laying around. It will basically be like this Flange->Pipe->Flex Pipe->Pipe-> Flange. All of this I have laying around and all of it is 304SS. Now I have some 308SS filler but the only gas I have is a 85/15 mix that I use for mild steel. Will I have any problems using this gas ? Being as how I don't usually (hardly ever) weld stainless I can't see getting another bottle of tri mix for this small project.

It should work fine.

i would also make the flex connect directly to a flange so as too reduce cuts and welds.

Yeah you can do it. It will weld weird, but it will work. It won't be pretty either.

as long as i can get good penetration and the welds hold up thats all that matters to me.

it's going to weld like ****, make the weld really brittle and it will rust but it will kind of sort of work.

btw where are you getting 85/15? 99% of the time it's 75Ar/25co2 thats used on mild steel. the 85/15(if that's what you really have) is costing you more and there is no real benefit to using it.

I would recommend an argon/helium/oxygen trimix for stainless mig welding but I too have done some gangsta welding in a pinch

Maybe find a friend with a tig and mooch some straight argon?

That would work, but you gotta run more voltage with argon vs the rest of the gases on stainless

there should be settings inside the case of the welder for straight argon and they are online at millers or lincolns websites.

when i got the welder i told them i needed a tank also and asked for 75/25. when i got home i noticed the tag on the bottle said 85/15. didn't question it and it welds ok with it so it was of no big concern to me. As far as borrowing some argon, nobody i know well enough to borrow from has any welding equiptment so thats kinda out of the question. hmm well if the welds are gonna be brittle, thats not gonna work so i may have to rent a bottle just for this, damnit.

I was talking to a guy today who said his SS exhaust was welded up using mild wire and 75/25 and its held up good on his DD for the past 8months. What do you guys think about that option ?
