Default learning to weld TIG

ive been wanting to take up welding for a long time and i keep missing the sign up dates for community college. i was going to just bite the bullet and buy a tig welder and start messing around.
id think i should start with mig and work my way up to tig but almost everything i want to weld requires tig.

when i do get in the classes i have to go in order and start with arc welding and i think tig is like the 4th class so by the time i get all the pre requisites out of the way i probably wont be in a tig class till late this year.

is it a dumb idea to get a tig welder (oconotig) if ive never welded in my life?

ps. ido have a buddy who was a fabricator so i think he knows a good deal and will help me out with hard ?'s

I learned TIG with no prior welding experience whatsoever. I tried MIG the last night of the course and it was very easy to pick up. Check with your local welding supply shop and see if they offer courses. I took mine through a local store that has a room set up for classes, clinics and even for if you want to try out certain products before you buy them.

you dont step up from mig to tig, almost everything about them is different.

a good step would be oxy to tig. oxy is really cool in my book.

yeah O/A is exactly like tig. make a puddle, add filler. the first time i jumped on the tig i was laying down perfect beads on steel, aluminum and stainless.

so if youre gonna go to school for welding just do O/A then quit and get your tig.
